C. N. BENNETT.

Patented Feb. 22, 1876.

TTNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OHARLESN. DENNETT, OF SALISBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,774, dated February 22, 1876; application filed November 18, 1875.
tudinal central section, one seat only being in a position ready for use. tails to be referred to.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable seats for vehicles, and consists in the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents the car- Figs. 4 and 5, de-
riage-body,composed of the sills a, floor b, and
panels 0 a, secured to the outside of the sills. B B are the front posts, the lower ends of which are curved or bent while subjected to the action of steam or otherwise, and are glued and screwed to the outside of the panels, being also bolted through them to the standards O rising from the outsides of the sills. At a point at or near the level of the top of the standards and panels each post is rounded off and contracted in size by cutting away its inner side, so as to afford ample room for the front seat E to swing freely between the front posts. of the front of the forward seat is a metal plate, e, to which is pivoted one end of a rod, G, the other end of which is joined at 5 to a second rod, H, having its opposite end pivoted to a plate, f, secured to the upper side of the sill a, at a point in proximity to the foot of the standard 0, and each end of the rearof this front seat is pivoted to the top of its standard,
by which construction, when the seat is thrown On the under side of each end forward into a position ready for use, its front is supported at each end by the rods G H, at the junction of their inner ends, the rods being swung into such a position that they will bear at their joint 5 on the sill, the rear of the forward seat being supportedby the tops of the standards 0. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) The ends or arms 9 of the front seat are rounded off and fit (when thrown down) into recesses h of corresponding shape formed in the panels 0, the position of the forward seat E and its rods G H when the seat is turned in or folded being shown in Fig. 5. The back seat I at each end is pivoted to the upper end of a bracket, t, Fig. 5, the lower end of which is pivoted to a plate, j, secured to the sill, the withdrawal of a bolt, 70, admitting of the removal of the seat without detaching the brackets therefroml is a small'strip or plate secured to the inside of each cleat m, forming the end which supports the back seat, and rests on the top of the body or panel, this plate 1 being bent around at its outer end so as to come in the path of and serve as a stop for the inner portion of the bracket when the back seat is thrown forward over the front seat, thereby preventing it from being tipped back accident-ally'should the occupant of this seat brace himself in that direction, Fig. 4. n n represent the rear posts of the standing top.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by attaching the lower portions of the front posts to the outside of the panels or body of the carriage, instead of to the inside or top of the body, as heretofore, and by cutting away or rounding off the portion of the posts above the body or panels, I am enabled to furnish sufficient room for the front seat to be swung up and down between them in a ready and convenient manner, and by having the upper end of each bracket of considerable width and pivoted at its extremities, its connection with theseat is secure, and all liability of its lateral play (which would cause the seat to be brought to an uneven bearing) is thereby avoided.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A four post carriage having its frnnt brackets i and back' seat I, as and,. foi the posts B secured to the body or panels with purpose set forth.
their inner surfaces flush with the outer sur- Witnessmy hand this 15th day of Novemfaces of the panels, in combination with a bar, A. D. 1875.
front shifting seat, so that the seat of full CHARLES N. BENNETT. width of the body may be turned back, as set Witnesses: forth. N. W. STEARNS,
2. The stops 1, in combination with the P. E. TESCHEMAGHER.
