1. F. KAHRE. TABLE ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-31, 9K4.

r JOHN F. KAI-IRE, OF VINCENNES, INDIANAf TABLE ATTACHMENT F03 BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 31, 1914. Serial No. 859.512.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I JOHN-F. Kiunin a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of 'Knox, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usemake and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for beds,'and particularly to table or tray attachments therefor.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which can be quickly and easily moved into and out ofuse, and which can be readily folded.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construe I tion, and which can be easily attached to or removed from the ordinary metal bed.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in'connection with the accompanying drawing. r In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a bed showing my invenuse. I Fig;
tion applied thereto and in position for Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. 3 is an end elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 oi" Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. (3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line (3-6 oi Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents one oi the side ails of a metal bedstead and 11 one ofthe 'loot posts thereof. A vertical member 12 disposed close to the rail 10 and is provided with a clamp 13 which is vertically adjustable thereon by means of the slot '12 and screw 13', and which is detachably engaged with the said rail. The purpose of this adjustment is to secure a cross adjustment of the distance below the bed rai l at which the rails 15 are positioned. This vertical member is formed with a pair of openings 14. in which are secured the ends of pair of round rails 15. The other ends of therai'ls are secured to a plate 16, which carries a pivoted wing 17, formed with the longi- "tudinally extending bifurcated portions 18.
The plate and wing are each semieylindrica'l in shape and are engaged around the "send simple and eflicient device for post 11 of the bed. To the plate at 18' are pivotally secured thc clamping bolts 19, said bolts being arranged to pass through tie bifurcated portions of the 'wing to secure the plate tc the post of thebcd. \Vhen the parts described have been thus secured in place it will be noted that the rails 15 are disposed in superposed relation below the rail of the bed. Between these rails 15 is disposed a carriage which is provided with the grooved wheels 20, the grooves of said wheels receiving the rails 15 therein so that said carriage can be moved easily from one end of the rails to the other. Extending vertically from the carriage 'is a hollow standard 21 which carries therein the verf tically slidable post 22, adjustable by means of the set screws 23. Secured adjacentthe upper end of the post is a bracket which consists of a pair of diverging arms extendmg out\ vardly and upwardly from the post,
said arms being indicated at 24. Pivoted to the upper ends of these arms are table supporting arms 25 on which is mounted a table 25, the same being held in position on the arms by means of bolts and nuts 25. Ex-
tending upward from the post 22 is ahead 22 which supports a transverse bar the ends whereof rest beneath the arms 25 when the table is in position for use and thus sup device is moved to the ends of the rails at the foot of the bed, the carriage clamped in position and the table or tray turned down. It will be observed also that when it is not desired to use the table the arms 25 may be swung on their pivots to permit the table to hang down alongside of the bed.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a use in connection with beds, and especially beds in hospitals, which canbe easily applied to the ordinary bed without any modifications to the bed. Furthermore, it will be seenthat by reason of the clamping means the can riage of the device can be secured in any lai cntcd Doc. 19, 1916.
desired rails 15.
What is claimed is:
A bed attachment comprising vertically spaced rails, means to secure said rails beneath the side rail of a bed, spaced wheel s running between the rails, a carriage carried position within the lengths of the by the wheels, a standard extending outwardly 'and upwardlyfrom said carriage, a post telescopically supported by the standard, means to hold the post in adjusted position with respect to the standard, a bracket carried by the post and comprising a pair of diverging arms extending outwardly and upwardly from the post, table supporting 15 arms pivoted to the bracket arms, a table mounted on the arms, a head projecting upward from the post, and a bar carried by the head and supporting the arms when the table is in position for use.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
