Sands, Cleveland, Ohio, assignors to The Harvard Manufacturing Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application February 18, 1949, Serial No. 77,186
5 Claims.
Our invention relates in general to an improvement and a new design in a method of and apparatus for Bed Assembly.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a means whereby a factory can standardize the manufacturing production to one kind (or one size in width) of headboard and/or footboard or both: that can be completed or assembled and/or offered for sale with any one of the five (5) different methods of assembly, each method of assembly to complete an individual bed; yet all interwoven or dependent on the standardization in manufacturing production, and each method to allow for adjustment, and fitting of spring and mattress to be used with the bed, each an independent or separate bed. Two methods of the five methods of assembly make use of a bed headboard and/or headboard and footboard as a means of supporting weight. Two methods of the five methods of assembly make use of the same headboard and/or headboard and footboard, but not to support any weight. A headboard, or headboard and footboard may be used in a floating position, all weight, including weight of headboard and/or headboard and footboard to be supported by means of bed frames.
In the 5 styles of bed assembly, described in the foregoing paragraphs, units for use in the assembly are designated in the drawing as A, B, C, D, E and are hereinafter described in more detail.
Other objects and uses of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the description and a reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows in perspective a wood post in fragment and means of completing bed assemblies, an integral part of all 5 ways incorporated into headboard and/or headboard and footboard.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a single bed rail with end plates at both ends, as the unit A, and as part of unit D.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View, partly broken away, of a single bed rail with end plate at one end only, as part of unit B and unit C.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a bed rail showing an end plate and slots as a part of the means for fastening the bed rails to the bed ends.

Fig. 7 is a broken away perspective view showing a frame with two rails as shown in Fig. 2 as part of the assembly for unit D.
Fig. 8 is an elevation of a double slotted plate to be used as desired, in place of single slotted plate, or in conjunction with single slotted plate. to permit of more adjustment in width when used with units A, B, C, and D, for positioning headboard and/or footboard, or made to be used with a headboard and/or footboard of a different size to be used with or without studs IA.
Fig. 9 is a vertical section of a frame showin a plate of Fig. 8 as used in place of single slotted plate, or in conjunction with single slotted plate, with a bed post, to permit of more adjustment in width.
Referring to the drawings, relative to the numerals or figures used: I is a bed post, IA are hollow, tapped metal studs inserted in holes in bed post I, IB are metal pins inserted in bed post I and driven all the way through studs IA, thus locking studs IA securely in place, 3 is a single slotted metal plate with slots 3A fixed on both ends of the rails 9, or on one end of each of the rails 9A, for attaching same to a headboard or footboard, or both, 4 is a metal bolt or cap screw inserted through slots 3A, in plate 3 at end, or ends of rails 9 or 9A, into studs IA as a means of engaging the rail to a headboard or footboard, or both. 5 and B are sections of cross rails used to hold side rails 9 or 9A together, attached by one end to side rails 9 or 9A, the overlapping centers being tied, or fixed together by means of clamp I3. I and 8 are sections of cross rails used to hold side rails 9 or 9A together, and are attached at one end by means of studs 3A to engage slot IOA in leg I9, which is attached to side rail 9 or 9A, as shown. The overlapping centers of I and 8 are tied or fixed together by means of clamp I3. 9 and 9A are bed rails used to support spring and mattress with plate 3 on one end, or both ends to which a headboard and/or footboard may be attached, I0 are legs which may be attached to cross rails 5 and E, or to bed rails 9 and 9A to fully support all weight as in unit 0 and D, or partial weight as in unit B, IIlA are slots used in legs I 9, when It is attached to side rais 9 or 9A, to engage studs 8A on cross rails I and 8, as a means of holding side rails 9 or 9A together. I I is a brace, I2 is a wheel caster, or glide with a bracket support I 4, which fits into leg II). I3 is a clamp arrangement tying or holding together cross rails 5, and 6, and I, and 8. I5 is a headboard, I6 is a footboard, I1 is 3 a double slotted plate with slots IIA that may be used in place of 3, or in conjunction with 3, to adapt a headboard or a headboard and footboard of difierent width and with or without studs IA.
Again referring to the drawings to describe the assembling of the different parts that form the bed of the invention:
Unit A as shown in Fig. 2, consists of two side rails 9, with plates 3 attached to each rail 9, the two rails 9 being used to assemble the headboard I5 and the footboard I6, by means of both 4, inserted thru slots 3A into studs IA, slots 3A permitting an adjustment in width to fit the spring which will rest on rail 9, the headboard and footboard supporting all the weight.
Unit B as shown in Fig. 5, consists of two rails 9A as shown in Fig. 3, with plates 3 on one end only. This end is attached to the same headboard I5, standing on the floor and supporting one end of rails 9A, by means of bolts 4 inserted thru slots 3A into studs IA. The other ends of rails 9A are supported by cross rails 5 and 6 to which legs III and casters I2 are secured, both cross rails 5 and 6 being attached to rails 9A and tied together by means of clamp I3. By means of clamp I3, cross rails 5 and 6 can be adjusted in width so that rails 9A will fit and support a spring and mattress, slots 3A permitting the same adjustment at the end where the headboard is attached.
Unite C shown in Fig. 6, is made from two side rails 9A, with plates 3 on one end. Secured to rails 9A are legs I and casters I2, with slots I BA to receive studs 8A, placed at the ends of cross rails I and 8, cross rails I and 8 being tied together by means of clamps I3. Slots 3A permit the attaching of the same headboard I by means of bolts 4 inserted thru slots 3A into studs IA, so that the headboard I5 is attached in a floating position, or in such a manner that the bed post I does not touch the floor, the weight of headboard I5 being fully supported by combinations of rails 9A, cross rails I and 8, legs II] and casters I2. Clamp I3 permits the adjustment in width of cross rails 'I and 8 so that side rails 9A will fit and support a spring and mattress, slots 3A permitting the same adjustment at the end where the headboard is attached.
Unit D shown in Fig. 7, comprises two side rails 9, with plates 3 on both ends. Secured to rails 9 are cross rails 5 and 6 to which legs I0 and casters or glides I2 are attached, cross rails 5 and 6 being tied together by means of clamp I3. The same headboard I5 and footboard I6 are attached to side rails 9 by means of bolts inserted thru slots 3A into studs IA, in a floating position, or in such a manner that the bed post I of headboard l5 and the bed post I of footboard I6 do not touch the floor. The weight of headboard I5 and footboard I8 being fully supported by combination of side rails 9, cross rails 5 and 6 and le I5 with casters I2. Clamp I3 permits the adjustment in width of cross rails 5 and 6 so that side rails 9 will fit and support a spring and mattress, slots 3A permitting the same adjustment at both ends where the headboard and footboard are attached.
Unit E is made from a combination of the plates IT with any one of units A, B, C and D. The double slotted plates ll, as shown in Figure 8 and Figure 9, may be used in place of or in conjunction with a single slotted plate 3, where other headboards and/or footboards are wider than a specified spring size. By means of the double 4 slotted plate the side rails 9 or 9A, in combination with parts, units and structure can be adjusted in width to fit and support a spring and mattress, without the use of slats, and still provide a means of attaching a headboard and/or footboard by means of studs IA, inserted in this headboard and footboard, or without studs IA.
It will be noted in particular that units A and B make use of a headboard or the same headboard and footboard so that either one or both support the weight, the novelty being that a width adjustment is maintained so that side rails 9 or 9A will fit and support substantially any width spring and mattress, yet permit the attaching of a headboard and/or footboard, by means of slots 3A in plates 3 to studs IA, which are manufactured to a set width with a set distance between the bed posts I. Units 0 and D make use of the same headboard and/or footboard but in a floating position, the same adjustments in width being maintained. In this manner a spring and mattress can be used and adapted to any one of the four units, usingthe same headboard and/or footboard.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that we have invented a new and novel bed construction and type of bed assembly. Any one of the units A, B, C, D and E will provide a complete means of assembly as described. The manner of attaching the headboard, footboard or both to the side rails permits the headboard and/or footboard to support all the weight, or permits the headboard and/or footboard to be suspended off the floor, in a floating position, and all the weight be carried or supported by the side rails in combination with parts, units or structure of cross rails, legs, casters or glides as described.
While we have shown and described our invention in desirable forms and structure, we do not desire to be limited to such particular forms or structure as adaptations in the use of the invention may require modifications and changes in such forms, structure, or both, without departing from the basic features, or spirit of the invention.
