To all whom t may concern:

Be it knownlthat I, CHARLES; S. Holi', a citizen of theV United States, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relatesV to improvements in beds.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a bed wherein the usual separable side-rails and foot-board, or panel are dispensed with, thereby A,to cheapen theA cost of the bed structure; to enhance the usefulness of the bed; to improve its appearance and to increase its capacity and space eciency.

Another and more specific object of my invention is to constitute the bed frame of the frame structure comprising an integral part of the ordinary box-mattress and to secure separable legs on each corner of said box-mattress and fastening means on the vupper surface of said bommattress for holding the superimposed hair-mattress in place, in the absence of the ordinary bed frame.

15 is the ordinary box-mattress structure having a leg 16 detachably secured ateach of its corners, and having ahead-board or panel 17., secured to one end ofthe box-mattress. 18 is a superimposed hairfmattress, of substantially the same' width little shorter than the box-'mattress 15. sewed to said hairmattress, as at 29, by preferably two or more rows of stitching at each end, leaving some fullness between said ends for engagement of the tongue`21 which is in the same manner secured to the upper surface of the bonmattress 15, as at 22. The tongue 21 is rovided,'at one end,'with an eyelet 23-an at the other end with a stud 2t. There are four clips 19 on each side of the mattress 18, as shown in-Fig. 1. en the hairfmattress 18 is placed on the box-mattress 15 the tongues and clips are in substantially the same respective vertical planes and each of the tongues 21 is slipped 'into the respective clipv 19 and the stud 2i is then pressed into the eye 23, as clearly shown in Fig. 10, for the purpose of holding' the hair-'mattress in proper place on the box-mattress, in the ab senceof the usual bed frame, to 'prevent the former from slipping from the latter. 'lhe frame of the box-mattress 15 is comprised of two parallel interior side rails 25 andy end rails-262 @verlying each of the rails, 25 and 26, is a somewhat wider plate 27, to support longitudinal 'marginal rows 28 of helical springs. are secured to the respective side rails 25 to support other series of rows of longer helical-springs 30, of which there may be a number of rows as usual vin the construction of bon-mattresses. 'li/fortised into the bottom 'of the ends of the meeting side Irails 25 and end rails 26, at each corner there is an angle plate 31, secured in place, as by means'of screws 32. Before the angle plate 31 is placed in position, if itis to be. made of wood, it is mortised to inclose a screw 'lFransversely extending slats 29 l roo threaded' angular nut`33 which is held in lill@ rails 25 and 26. A screw threaded stud 34 is let into the upper end of each of the legs' yplace. If the angle plate 31 is to be made of cast iron, or Athe like, it may be directly screw threaded and the presence of the sep-- 'arate nut 35 will, of course, not ,be necessary.' The stud 34 4is held in place to prevent it from turning in the leg 16 by means of a pin 34. The head-board, or panel 17, is bolted to the head-rail 26 of the box-mattress structure 15 by means of bolts 36, of which there may be any suitable or desired number. When the panel or head-board 17 is removed, by removing the nuts 38 from the bolts 36, the nuts and washers may be replaced upon the bolts to prevent them from passing back lthrough the head-rail 26, leaving them readily accessible for use when it is desired to again replace the head board.

The fabric 37 entirely enveloping or covering the box-mattress structure 15 is preferably tacked around the lower edges of the' end and side rails 25 and 26, except atthe end at which the head board is to be attached, in which place the fabric 37 is tacked to the outer edge of the plate 27, by use of tacks 39, leavin "a space 40 between the headboard and t e fabric 37. This space is convenient for receiving the ends of the bed clothes that pass over the mattress 18 and between the box-mattress structure and the head board 17, so as to make the bed appear tidy when properly made .up.

`A valance 41, preferably plaited, as at 42, `is detachably secured around the upper edge ofv the box-mattress by means of glove fasteners, or eyelets, and studs 43 and 44, the eyelets being secured to the mattress and the studs to the removable curtain or valance. This valance, or curtain,'extends to near the bottom'of the bed so as to screen from view the raw covering 37 of the box-mattress structure. The ordinary bed clothing, consisting of sheets, blankets, etc., 44 are preferably tucked under the mattress 18 and between the mattress 18 and the .box-mattress structure 15 the Ifastening clips 19 being placed suciently far back from the edges of the mattress' 18 to permit this operation. The bed covering 44 1s then overlaid with gemela spread 45, which preferably extends below the upper edge of the valance.

When the legs are removed from the boxmattress, by unscrewing, and the head-board or panel is disconnected from the end of the mattress structure, the bed is then in convenient form for transportation or storage and occupies minimum space. It is convenient to be moved, being readily taken' from one room to another, as often necessitated in hotels, hospitals, or the like, and is very easily and quickly set up. It is easy to be set up in place, is especially sanitary and presents the maximum area or surface for the purpose for which said bed is intended.

While I have herein shown a single embodiment of my invention for the purpose of clear disclosure it is manifest that many changes may be made in the general form,

' construction and disposition of parts withspace between said head board and upholstered portion and a part of the box mattress to accommodate bed clothing and detachable legs secured to the lower box portion of said mattress.

2. A bed comprising a box-mattress structure havin an interior supporting frame; a leg secure at each corner under the frame and a series of mattress-holding devices upon the upper surface of said box-mattress structure s aced inwardly from the marginal edges t ereof to hold the superimposed mattress in place on the box-mattress in the absence of the usual bed frame parts projecting above the mattress.
