Description

March 4, 1941. 555 2,233,864
SLIP COVER CONSTRUCTION Filed March 8, 1940 Patented Mar. 4, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to slip covers for studio couches and has particular reference to slip covers adapted for use on studio couches having arm supports at each of the ends thereof.
Another and further object of my invention is the provision'of a slip cover for studio couches having means at the ends thereof whereby the cover may be fitted over the arm supports of the couch in an attractive and. easy manner, and when placed in position presents the appearance of unitary structure without wrinkles or binding and presenting a neat and attractive appearance.
Another and further object is the provision of a couch cover especially for studio couches having arm supports at the ends thereof, which is made in the usual one-piece construction so that it can be easily removed for cleaning and laundry purposes, and having portions which overlap the base of the arm supports with appropriate fastening means, so that a symmetrical appearance is obtained and at the same time the unitary structure of the cover is retained and there is no danger of the loose pieces becoming lost when being cleaned or laundered.
Another and further object of the invention is the provision of a slip cover which can be easily and cheaply made and which is attractive and well fitting in service.
These and other objects of my invention will be more fully and better understood by reference to the accompanying sheet of drawing, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a studio couch having my cover applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a view partially in elevation and partially in section of the end of the cover in place on a studio couch;
Figure 3 is a vertical view, partially in section, of the corner portion of the slip cover shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an end view similar to Figure 2, illustrating a modified form of my invention; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view of the mod fied form shown in Figure 4.
Referring now specifically to the drawing and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout, a studio couch I is shown having arm supports I I and I2 at each end thereof, these' arm supports being usually of inverted U-shape and having their bases secured to the ends of the frame of the studio couch and extending upward above the upper side of the top section, with a pad or cushion mounted thereon to form an appropriate arm rest, particularly as shown in Figure 1. Loose pillows I3, I3 are shown, with which these couches are usually supplied, but which form no part of my present invention. A slip cover is shown for the couch, comprising a top I4, side portions I and I6, and 5 end portions H, H. It is with the construction of the end portions I1, ll of these slip covers that my invention has particularly to do.
The form of slip cover illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, comprises the top portion, such as I4, with the sides I5 and I6 composed of an upper portion I8, and a lower portion I 9, this lower portion I9 being fashioned in pleated rulile form or in the form of a valance if desired, so as to present a more attractive appearance to the cover. 5 The lower portion I9 is united to the section I8 at the sides of the cover by a row of stitching 20, while at the ends it is left free, particularly as shown in Figure 2. A row of snap fasteners 2|, 2I is provided along the lower marginal edge of the portion I8 at each of its ends, with a row of corresponding fastening members 22, 22 provided along the upper edge of the free lower portion I9 of the cover. The end of the portion I9 is folded around the corner of the couch to the rear of the section, where it is snapped in position to the upper section I5. As the free end of the portion 49 is passed around the ends of the couch, it is passed over the lower parts of the arm supports I I and I2, with the section I8 being placed inside of the arm supports I I and I2 at each of the ends thereof, so that when the free end is snapped in position the cover is securely placed upon the couch, presenting a smooth, attractive slip cover covering the entire studio couch.
In Figures 4 and 5 a modified form of cover is shown. The end portions comprise a lower Valance portion 23 and an upper portion 24, while a narrow strip 25 of material is secured to the top I4 of the couch cover and passes downward over the ends of the upper mattress forming a part of the couch a partial distance from the top thereof. The portions 23 and 24 are united along their median line by a row of stitching 26, while fasteners 21, 2'! are placed on the strip of material 25, which is positioned inside the arm supports I I and I2. Other rows of fasteners 28, 28 are secured along the upper edge of the portion 24, which passes outside of the parts of the arm supports II and I2 alongside the end of the couch, and is secured to the main body of the cover by the snap fasteners 2'! and 28. A free end 29, made up of the portions 23 and 24, passes around the corner of the couch and is secured against the rear side by appropriate fastening means.
The difference between the form shown in Figures 4 and and that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 is that the fastenings in one instance are intermediate the top and bottom, while in Figures 4 and 5 they are adjacent the top of the cover.
The use and application of the slip cover will be easily understood from the foregoing description and from the drawing. When the cover body is made in the form illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, the portions l9 are left detached from the body of the cover at each of the ends, When application is made to a studio couch the body of the cover is placed over the upper section of the couch with the lower portion of the ends free, and when they are placed in position they are lapped over the lower part of the arm supports II and [2 of the couch and snapped into position. Application of the form shown in Figures 4 and 5 is made in precisely the same manner, with the fastening members being placed along the upper marginal end of the end portions rather than intermediate their tops and bottoms.
While I have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A slip cover for a studio couch having arm supports on the outside of the end faces, comprising top, side and end portions, portions of the ends of the cover being free to overlap the base of the arm supports of a studio couch and having the upper marginal edges of their free end portions overlapped over the adjacent marginal edge of the cover, and cooperating fastening means secured to the upper free marginal edge of the said end portions and to the top portion of the cover in alignment with each other when in normal position to cover a studio couch.
2. A slip cover for a studio couch, having arm supports on the outside of the end faces comprising a cover having a top portion, side and end portions, the end portions being free along their upper edges and overlapping the top portion adjacent thereto, and cooperating fastening members along the upper marginal edges of said end portions and overlapped top portion whereby the free end portions are held in position over the lower parts of the arm supports, the end portions of the top portion of said cover being inside of the said arm supports.
