Description

A ril 14, 1942. c. FUCHS F SANITARY MATTRESS Filed May 20, 1940 INVENTOR Mar/es Fae/rs J I :aTI'ORNEY Patented Apr. 14, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Charles Fuchs, Philadelphia, Pa. Application May 20, 1940, Serial No. 336,177
1 Claim.
It is an object of my invention to provide a mattress which will be built of quilted pad sections, which may be readily cleaned individually or separated for airing or cleansing purposes, or it may be arranged so that a water-proof matting will be inserted adjacent or on the top layer to prevent children from wetting or dirtying the lower pads. Or when my invention is used in hospitals, a water-proof cover may be placed on the top where the patient is to be washed while in bed.
Under certain conditions, it may be desirable to increase the thickness or the number of the paddings, as in the case where a person desires a very thick mattress, and this may be done at the option of the user. g;
Another object of my invention is to provide means for resiliently supporting a mattresswith respect to the spring.
Another object of my invention is to provide a variable cushioning effect of thevmattress.
Another object of my invention is to provide quilted. pads supported at the edges to the spring frame so that the pads will not become flattened and the wadding bunched up and displaced.
Another object of my invention is to provide the upper part of a mattress which is near to a patient with a soft quilt so as to avoid chilling or having other disagreeable effects incidental to having a rubberized fabric close to the body.
Another object of my invention is to provide an upper quilted pad or rubber protector adapted to be freely detachable so that it may be removed,
when soiled, in the same manner as the bed sheet and replaced in the same manner that a clean sheet is placed on the bed.
Qther objects of my invention are to provide an improved device of the character described,
that is easily and economically produced, which is sturdy in construction and which is highly efllcient in operation.
With the above and related objects in vie my invention consists in the following details of construction and combination of parts, as will 55 be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a mattress em- 5 bodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of F18; 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the thin pads embodied in my invention.
Referring now in particular to the drawing, the mattress, generally designated as A, embodying my invention comprises an upper metal frame l0 and a lower frame I! having a plurality of spiral springs H suitably connected thereto. The frames are made of suitable rods bent into a shape to serve as a frame. Upper and lower sheets of fabric i6, I8 are stretched over the upper and.
lower portions of the spring frames, and surrounding the sides of the spring frame is a fabric 20, which is joined by suitable stitchings to the upper and lower sheets. Suitable stitching 22 holds the side piece of fabric to the metallic frame I0, and suitable stitching 24 holds the side fabric 20 to the lower frame II.
A plurality of side straps or couplings, each designated as 28, are adapted to be passed through eyelets in each of the individual pads, generally designated as B, to hold the pads at their edges and in alignment.
Couplers or other strap holding members are suitably located around the side of the side fabric 20 in order that the pad will be properly held together.
My improved mattress is used in the conventional fashion. For cleaning, airing, or for repair, it is merely necessary to open the fasteners or straps 28 after the washable cover C has been removed. This allows the holding strips to be unhooked from hooks 32. The hooks 32 may then 40 be disengaged from suitable eyelets in the strap and the padmembers removed. The pads may next be aired, repaired or changed for pads of different quantity or qualities. The pads and/or sheets also may be aired or cleaned, and the mattress may be assembled in a very short period of time so that its use is practical.
The springs H are attached to the frame in any I suitable manner and are adequately covered or enclosed by the fabrics l6, l8 and 20.- The quilted pads are preferably thin so that they may be disassembled from the mattress by opening the strips, or a different number of pads may be added. The pads also may be coupled with a water-proof fabric covering.
Each pad has a plurality of metallic eyelets 3| therein adiacent the edges in order to interfit with the holding strips II. Any number of pads B may be coupled together to get any thickness or thinness of mattress, or water-proof material can be laid adjacent the top layer of the mattress depending on the use. The entire unit is then placed within a washable zipper case, generally designated as C, which makes the entire unit appear as a unitary device. A zipper It enables the casing C to be opened whereby the pads may be removed or added to the mattress.
My invention may be applied to removable cushions for chairs as well as for bed mattresses and for individual seats for motor vehicles or aeroplanes.
Although my invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may be variously embodied, and the scope of the invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim as my invention: A mattress comprising an upper frame and a lower frame, a plurality of springs interconnected between said frames, a fabric covering enclosing said springs and frames, a line of stitching holding said fabric covering in position on the frames, a plurality of removable pads resting upon the upper portion of said frames and a plurality of pads attached to the lower portion of said frames, said pads having aligned openings therethrough and along the edges of the pads, a plurality of straps for holding said pads in position, each strap having one end sewed to said fabric covering for the frames, each of said straps passing outwardly from said fabric covering through the complementary pad openings and a portion of said strap rebent substantially parallel to the portion passing through the openings. the ends of said straps meeting and being. adapted to be held together, a water-proof covering for the upper portion of said mattress, and a detachable casing of fabric totally enclosing said pads, springs and straps.
