This invention relates to improvements in mattresses.

One of the objects of this-invention is theprovision of a mattress made up in a. plurality of sections so that the mattress can be used either with or without an intermediate section of ordinary spring construction used in the make-up of mattresses at the present time, which not only increases the thickness of the mattress, but increases the yieldability of the same.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved type of mattress made up of a plurality of sections detachably connccted so that the sections may be quickly and easily taken apart for cleansing purposes so as to maintain them in a highly sanitary condition, and wherein the connec tion between the sections is of such construct on that the mattress can be used either with or without a central section, but still maintain the high efficiency of the mattress itself.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved type of mattress which comprises a plurality of superposed sections with the outside sections being constructed of a covering of cotton ticking, filled with either cotton, hair, or other similar material with the intermediate section, the use of which is optional and of spring construction of any Well known type provided with a suitable covering, the upper and lower sections being provided with overhanging edges which are adapted to be detachably connected so that the mattress can be quickly assembled, eithcr with or without the spring section in the center, and can likewise be taken apart very readily for cleans'ng purposes.

With the above and other objects in view. the invention consists in the novel features of construction, the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress constructed in accordance with this invention;

Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional View;

Figure 3 is an enlarged detailed sectional view showing the mattress, using the intermediate section; and,

Figure 4 is a detail elevation on a small scale illustrating the mattress in closed position, eliminating the central section.

Referring more particularly to, the drawings, it will be noted that in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the mattress is illustrated as having the intermediate section of spring members incorporated in its make-up. However, it will 69 be understood that this central spring section can be omitted if found desirable and the mattress used equally as well.

In the construction of this improved mattress, it comprises the two outermost sections 1 and 2, and the central section 3. The two outer sections 1 and 2 are of similar construction, each comprising an outer cotton ticking cover 4 and an inner ticking sheet 4:, the space between which is filled with cotton, hair, or 70 other similar filler, as shown at 5, and the covering as well as the filler are bound together by means of the cross strings 6, having headed portion 7 attached to each end thereof, the edges of the cover 4 are brought over the filler 5 and secured to the inner ticking sheet or the like.

Suitable connecting pendants 8 are provided for each outer section and each pendant is formed by continuing the outer ticking 4 and looping it upon itself, as illustrated, and then stitching the same to the bottom layer of ticking, as shown at. 9. Both the upper and lower sheets of ticking 4 and 4 which comprise the casing for the two outer sections are folded upon themselves, as shown at 10, and a binding tape 11 is fitted over these folded portions and stitched thereto, as shown at 12. The relative position of the folded portions 10 are such as to permit the pendants 8 to be folded inwardly, or outwardly, as the casemay require. I

The pendants 8 carried by the section 1 are provided with socket members 13, arranged at spaced intervals around the entire outside of the mattress and these socket members are adapted to he engaged with headed parts 14 carried by the pendants 8 of the mattress section 2. As stated heretofore, the two sections 1 and 2 are constructed in the same manner and of the same material, while the intermediate section or spring section comprise a housing 15 of cotton ticking or thelike, and within this housing are the helical springs 16 arranged in spaced relation with their outermost coils connected by means of the loops 17, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2.

The spring section which is illustrated in operative position in Figure 2, may or may not be used. and it will be noted that the same can be quickly and easily removed by detaching a sufficient number of the socket members 13 from the head members 14. so that the spring section 3 may be inserted between the two outside sections. or removed therefrom.

IVhen the spring section 3 is used in connection with the two outside sections. it produces a comparatively thick box-like mattress, as shown in Figures 1 and Q, and increases the yieldability of the mattress itself. However, the mattress can be used equally as well without the spring section and when the spring section is removed and the two outside sections connected together, the mattress will assume the appearance shown in the small view indicated at Figure 4, wherein the upper section 1 has its pendant part 8a depending downwardly upon the outside, while the pendant part of the lower section 2 is folded inwardly.

It will be noted in Figure 3, that instead of continuing the outer la ver of ticking of the two outside sections to form the loops for the construction of the pendants, the inner lining section is continued, it merely being the reverse in construction of that illustrated in Figure 2. This construction illustrates the fact that the outside sections, together with the pendant portions may be constructed in either way. In Figure 3, the outside section is stitched to the looped inside section at 10, while the inside section of the covering is looped to form the pendant part 8, and the inside, as well as the outside layer of ticking is looped at 11 and both looped sections are covered with the tape 12.

From the above, it will be apparent that a mattress constructed in accordance with this invention will prove very efficient, both as a spring box mattress, or as the ordinary cotton or hair filled mattress, and the sections of the mattress can be quickly and readily as sembled or disassembled, and the mattress can be used equally as well with or without the spring section 3.

This type of mattress will prove very sanitary in view of the fact that the several sections can be quickly taken apart for cleansing purposes, and as each section can be handled separately, the mattress will be very convenient for the housewife, particularly at springcleaning time, when it is desired I to take the mattress apart and clean the same in sections.

The construction of the mattress itself is very simple and in view of the fact that it can be made up and sold at a very low price, it is believed that it will readily meet with the approval of the public, and it will prove very eiiicient either as a box spring mattress, or as the ordinary stuffed mattress type.

IVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent that slight changes may be made in the construction when putting the invention into practice without departing from the spirit of the same or the scope of the appended claim.

I claim:

A mattress comprising like top and bot tom sections and a removable intermediate coil spring section, each of the top and bottom sections including an outer sheet ol ticking and an inner sheet of ticking, and padding interposed between said sheets of ticking, stitching securing the ticking together about the padding, said padding terminating at the stitching, one of said sheets of ticking being extended beyond the padding and folded upon itself defining pockets engaging the sides of the intermediate section, padding in said pockets terminating short of the first padding. stitching securing the edges of the extended portion of the ticking to the edges of the other sheet of ticking, the ticking being in facial contact at the point of stitching, whereby to form a hinge connection between the pockets and the body portions of the ticking, the pockets ot the bottom and top sections overlapping one another when the sections are placed together, and means detachably connecting the overlapping portions together.
