Claims. (Cl. 5- 327) My invention relates to a dual purpose bed rest pillow and which in assembled relation provides a bed rest pillow having arm rests at each side thereof which may be used with a bed, couch, davenport, cot or the like as a p support pillow for use by one sitting up in bed upon a mattress, a couch or the like and which can be disassemlbled and the component parts used as an ordinary pillow,

headrest, cushion, or the like and also when in such disassembled relation can be stored on a closet shelf, within a drawer or in a comparatively small space compared with what would be needed if the pillow unitary form were attempted to be stored. Another and further object of my invention is the pro vision of a dual purpose rest pillow which can be used placed in a plurality of positions upon the floor of the station wagon and which, when disassembled, can also be used as an ordinary pillow or cushion might be used as a head rest for sleeping purposes.

Another and further object of my invention is the provision of a dual purpose bed rest pillow which is made in the usual formof pillows of this type, but which is providedwith flexible covers stitched or secured together by means of Zippers or the like and a filling such as foam rubber which can be cut to various sizes and shaped to conform to the contours of the shell within which the filling is placed, which covers can be easily and quickly removed from the filling and washed in the usual manner or dry cleaned as may be desired.

Another and further object of my invention is the pro vision of a bed-rest 'pillow consisting of a back rest section and arm rest section of two arm rests connected by bands, one .of which is connected to the rear ends of the arm rests, and the other is connected to the arm rests intermediate their ends which, with the arm rests, forms an open ended compartment within which the back rest section is removably fitted and held in operative relation with the arm rest sections to form a complete pillow for supporting the upper part of the body in a sitting position, and which can easily disassembled for storage purposes, and the covers of the units removed for cleaning or laundry purposes. t 7

These and other objects of my invention will be more fully and better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings and in which:

Referring now specifically to the drawings and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout, a back support and arm rest portion 10 is shown which comprises arm rest portions 11 and 12 which are substantially alike and generally equal in size and rectangular shape, and with respect to the arm rest 11 comprises an outer case portion'consisting of an outer side wall portion 13, an inner side wall portion 14, and a single strip of material which is folded into a top portion 15, a front portion 16 and a rear portion 17, which strip of material is stitched along its inner edge to the top of the side portion 14 and to the front portion 16 along its inner vertical edge and to the rear portion 17 along its inner vertical edge. The top portion 15 and the ends' 16 and 17 of the casing are stitched along their outer edges to the outer wall portion 13, thereby forming a casing for the arm rest portion 11 on three sides and at each end, but open at its bottom. A bottom 18 for the casing is provided which consists of two strips of

material

19 and 20 secured together along their adjacent edges by a zipper 21 and to the end portions 16 and 17 along their bottom edges. The strip of material 19' is secured to the inner wall portion along its outer edge while the strip 20 is secured to the outer wall portion 13 along its lower outer edge, thus forming a complete case for the arm rest portion 11. A block of sponge rubber filler 21a molded or cut to proper shape is fitted into the case thus formed, thereby completing the arm rest 11.

The side portion 13 and top 15 are secured together along their adjacent meeting lines by means of a bead 22 which has a strip of material 23 thereon which is wrapped around the bead 22 and the inner marginal edges of the strip of material 23 folded together and stitching 24 passed through the marginal edges of the side 13 and top 15 and through the folded portions of the covering material'23 surrounding the bead 22 thereby securing the side 1.3 and top 15 -securely together and providing beaded corners which adds to the attractiveness of the unit. The cover material for the bead 22 maybe of the same material as are the side, and end portions of the arm rest 11 or may be made of a different color or a difierent material thus providing a decorative eifect on the .corners of the component. parts forming the unit.

The seams at theother corners of the arm rest are fashioned in the same manner as the seam hereinabove described, and the same type of stitching is preferably used in the making of the other component parts of the

The bottom 42 has its forward edge secured to the lower front edge of the portion 39 and at its rear edge has a Zipper 46 extending thereacross, which zipper 46 also extends upward in the side panels near their rear' edges which enables the case to be removed from the filling 45 of the back section of the pillow whentit is desired to remove the cover from the filling for cleaning or laundering the case. i

In use of the device, the back portion 38 is inserted into the space 37 with the widened end of the back portion being in substantial register of the bottoms of the arm rests 11 and 12 so that the three surfaces are on substantially the same level and when placed upon a mattress or other level surface, will be fairly stable and will resist overturning to a considerable degree. The larger end portion of the back section 38 is fitted .within the space 37 and when in use, a person may sit upon a mattress with elbows resting upon the arm rest sections 11 and 12 and the back section 38 in engagement with the back of the person and Because of the elastic filling, the back section 38 is yielding to weight placed against it or upon it, but is stable to support a person leaningagainst it, particularly if the arms of the person are rest ing upon the arm rests 11 and 12. In this position the pillow can be placed upon a bed or in any numerable instances for supporting the back and elbows of a person secured at its ends to the inner side walls of the arm rest sections intermediate their ends whereby a space is produced between the arm sections for receiving one end of the said back section and being fitted into the said space and held in position by the band and arm rest sections in assembled relation.

2. A bed rest pillow comprising a back section, a plurality'of arm rest sections, a' rear band secured at its ends to the said arm rest sections and a second band secured at its ends to the inner side walls of the arm rest sections intermediate their ends and spaced from the said rear band with the back section removabiy fitted between the said bands and the said arm rest sections.

3. A bed rest pillow comprising a back portion of greater thickness at one end than the other, whereby a base portion is formed at one of its ends, arm rest sections at each of its ends, a band connecting the said arm rest sections at their rear ends and spanning the space therebetween, and a second hand secured at each of its ends to the inner walls of the said arm sections intermediate the ends of the said arm rest sections and extending diagonally in a vertical direction across the faces of the said arm rests, the arm rests and the bands frictionally engaging the lower portion of the back portion and forming a support for holding the said back portion in a vertical direction in assembled relation and permitting the separation of the back portion from the arm portions in disassembled relation.

4. A bed rest unit comprising in combination a back support pillow having a greater thickness at one of its ends than at the other and a pair of arm rest pillows connected together at one of their ends by a flexible band of material secured at each of its ends to the said arm rest pillows and by a flexible band spaced from the said first mentioned band a distance substantially equal to the greatest thickness of the back support pillow, the said 7 back support pillow being fitted between the said flexible sirable to store these units, they can be easily placed on 5 a shelf in a closetor'in a door or the like with a minimum of space necessary for storing them.

In this condition the back rest can also be used as a cushion or as a pillow and can be used without the arm rests if used in connection with a davenport already having a fixed back or a couch having some form of movable back support. It will thus be understood that the pillow as shown and described herein has a multiplicity of purposes and uses as well as occupying a minimum of storage space if it is desired to dismantle the pillow and store it when not in use. 7

While I have described more or less precisely the method employed and the apparatus used therewith, I do not wish to be understood as limiting mystelf thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.

I claim: v

1. A bed rest pillow comprising a back section, a plurality of arm rest sections, a rear band secured at its ends to the said arm rest sections and a second hand bands and held in vertical position by the said flexible bands of material secured to the arm rest pillows.

A bed rest unit comprising in combination a back support pillow having a greater thickness at one of its ends than at the other and a pair of arm rest pillows connected at one of their ends by a flexible band of material secured at each of its ends to the ends of the said arm rest pillows and by a second flexible band spaced from the said second band a distance substantially equal to the greater thickness of the back support pillow, the

Claims

1. A BED REST PILLOW COMPRISING A BACK SECTION, A PLURALITY OF ARM REST SECTIONS, A REAR BAND SECURED AT ITS ENDS TO THE SAID ARM REST SECTIONS AND A SECOND BAND SECURED AT ITS ENDS TO THE INNER SIDE WALLS OF THE ARM REST SECTIONS INTERMEDIATE THEIR ENDS WHEREBY A SPACE IS PRODUCED BETWEEN THE ARM SECTIONS FOR RECEIVING ONE END OF THE SAID BACK SECTION AND BEING FITTED INTO THE SAID SPACE AND HELD IN POSITION BY THE BAND AND ARM REST SECTIONS IN ASSEMBLED RELATION.
