(Cl. 5-327) This invention relates to bed rest pillows formed of a back pillow and side arms. In such bed rest pillows of the prior art, the back pillow and the arms may not be separated one from the other, and thus, each arm and the back may not be separately and individually disposed in storage or shipment. This complicates not only the storage problem, but the shipment problem of such units.

In the bed rest pillow of my invention, means are provided for separably connecting each of the arms to the pillow. The several units, i.e. each of the arms, are separable from the back pillow, and may be separately stored, assembled, and shipped. Means are provided to permit the assembling of the arms into a pillow separate from the back pillow member. Thus, the utility of the bed rest pillows is increased. The back pillow and the assembled arms can form two separate pillows for separate use.

It is thus an object of my invention to provide a bed res-t pillow having a back and side arm with means for separately mounting each of said arms on opposite bottom ends of the back pillow, and means for their separate removal.

It is a further object of my invention to provide side loops, one on each side of the back pillow into which the side arms may be inserted.

It is a further object of one form of my invention to detachably connect said loops to the side of said back pillow with means permitting also the connection of said loops into a strip formed of said separate loops.

It is a further object of my invention to permit said arms to be assembled in a side by side arrangement, and means securing said strip formed from said side loops around said arms to secure the arms into a pillow formation.

These and other objects of my invention will appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment of my invention when taken together with the drawings of which:

-FIG. 1 shows the bed pillow in one application. The bed pillow has a back pillow shown as wedged shaped, having its narrowest end 1 at the upper end and having trapezoidal sides 2, and a front 3 and back 4 surfaces. The pillow may be covered with fabric, leather, plastic or other material such as used in the pillow art. They may be filled with material used in pillow construction, for example, foam rubber or a resilient foam plastic, kapok or other material as is conventionally used of bed pillow construction.

Near the bottom end of the pillow is provided a loop 5 and a loop 6, one on each side of the pillow, each made of a band of flexible material such as fabric, and

one end secured to the bottom end of the sides, the other end of the loop secured to the side part way up the side.

The wedge shaped arms are each inserted into

5 and 6. The loops have an open area which is sufficient to receive the narrow end of the wedge shaped arms and hold them securely in frictional engagement with

14 and 16 contiguous to the back surface 4 of the back pillow. One or both of the side arms may carry an exterior pocket 17, extending along one side of one or both of the arms and terminating short of the loops, when the arms are in place in the loops. While I prefer to make the arms wedge shaped to permit the easy entrance of the arm into the loop, the arms may be made with parallel sides instead of being wedge shaped. The pockets may also be omitted.

By removing the arms from the retaining loops, the parts may be separately placed, packed and stored.

The loops may be secured as by sewing to the sides as is illustrated in FIG. 5, or by snaps as is illustrated in FIG. 6, employing two snap halves having a projection attached to the end 17 of the loop, and two complementary sockets 18 on the sides 2. Also two socket ends 18 at the other end of the loop 5, and to projections on the side 2, are provided. In like manner, the loop 6 is connected by snaps to the side 3. The loops may be removed from the sides and connected to a continuous strip connecting the respective ends entering projections of one of the strips into the sockets at one end of the other of said strips. The strip thus formed is of length sufiicient to go around the arms when placed side by side. The free ends of the strip carry sockets at one end, the projections at the other. They may be engaged to secure the arm side by side to form the pillow as shown in FIGURE 8. A similar construction may be used with arms having parallel sides, i.e. not wedge shaped. The same construction may be used in shipping or storing the pillow. This facilitates both shipping and storing.

Additionally, the bed rest thus has a multiple use and may be used as a bed rest pillow with arms, or as two separate pillows.

While I have described particular embodiments of my invention for the purpose of illustration, it should be understood that various modifications and adaptations thereof may be made within the spirit of the invention, as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A bed rest pillow comprising: a backrest having top, bottom, front and rear surfaces, said backrest also having two side surfaces extending upwardly from said bottom surface to said top surface and forwardly from said rear surface to said front surface; a first loop of material attached to one of said side surfaces near said bottom surface; a second loop of material attached to the other of said side surfaces near said bottom surface; a first armrest having one end removably mounted in said first loop; and a second armrest having one end removably mounted in said second loop.

2. A bed rest pillow comprising: a backrest having top, bottom, front and rear surfaces, said backrest also having two side surfaces extending upwardly from said bottom surface to said top surface and forwardly from said rear surface to said front surface; a first loop of material secured by snaps to one of said side surfaces near said bottom surface; a second loop of material secured by snaps to the other of said side surfaces near said bottom surface; a first armrest inserted into said first loop, said first armrest extending through said first loop to a position terminating near the said rear surface of said backrest, said first armrest being frictionally secured in said first loop; and a second armrest inserted into said second loop, said second armrest extending through said second loop to a position terminating near the said rear surface of said backrest, said second armrest being frictionally secured in said second loop.

3. The bed rest pillow of claim 2, wherein said loops are joinable at said snaps into a strip, said strip being adapted to be secured about both of said armrests while said armrests are positioned adjacent each other to form a pillow.

4. A bed rest pillow comprising: a backrest having top, bottom, front and rear surfaces, said backrest also having two side surfaces extending upwardly from said bottom surface to said top surface and forwardly from said rear surface to said front surface; a first loop of material se- 20 cured by snaps to one of said side surfaces near said bottom surface; a second loop of material secured by snaps to the other of said side surfaces near said bottom surface;

a first wedge shaped armrest having one end narrower face of said backrest, said first armrest being friction-ally engaged in said first loop; and a second armrest having one end narrower than another end thereof opposite said one end, said narrower end of said second armrest extending through said second loop to .a position terminating near the said rear surface of said backrest, said second armrest being frictionally secured in said second loop.

5. The bed rest pillow of claim 4, wherein said loops are joinable at said snaps into a strip, said strip being adapted to be secured about both of said armrests while said armrests are positioned adjacent each other to form a pillow.
