UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BED GUARD Josephine Di Bella Herz and Harry Herz, Fort Pierce Beach, Fla.
Application October 26, 1951, Serial No. 253,334
(c1. s asl) Claims. 1 i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in beds for infants and children and relates more particularly to a novel attachment for beds which will instantly convert the bed into an arrangement which is suitable for young children who have outgrown the crib stage but who nevertheless have need for side guarding devices to prevent them from rolling out of the bed.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a novel bedside guard which will quickly convert an ordinary bed, consisting of a spring and mattress, with or without a head board, into a childs bed which prevents the child from falling off the bed, much in the same manner as the known youth beds but which does not alter the structure of the conventional bed and which permits the latter to be instantly reconverted back to its former status.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bed guard which can be shipped or stored in flat condition While occupying little space and can instantly be set up for use to provide a rigid and safe guard.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment oi the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a broken section taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a broken perspective view showing the method of securing the side boards to the head board;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing a modied form of the invention;
Fig. 5 is a broken section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the device.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the rst embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, includes a head board I0 and side boards H and I2. For convenience in shipping and storage, the parts are made demountable and to this end the side boards are provided on their rear edges with lugs I3 which are received in recesses Il! on each side of the head board. When the parts are secured in place the head board gives approved rigidity to the side boards.
The latter are further connected at their outer ends by a cross-piece I5 which may be made from fabric. A similar cross-piece It is secured at the opposite ends of the side board.
The width of the head board is substantially the same as the width of the bed spring Il, which latter is shown as being mounted on legs I8. Thus, the side boards and head board are supas shown in Fig. 2' and the latter holds the crosspieces and the Whole structure firmly in place.
Also, the sides of the mattress engage the side boards.
The modied structure of Figs. 4, 5 and 6 is arranged for use on a bed which is already provided with a fixed head board shown at 2t. The side boards 2| and 22 are again connected by the ilexible cross-pieces 23 and 24. In this instance, however, the rear terminals of the side boards are connected by a member 25 which may be a flexible strap made from the same material as the cross-pieces.
This structure, while not so rigid as the first one, nevertheless gives good results since normally there is nc great strain imposed on the side boards.
While two forms or embodiments of the invention have been shown and described herein for illustrative purposes, and the construction and arrangement incidental to two specific applications thereof have been disclosed and discussed in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is limited neither to the mere details or relative arrangement of parts, nor to its specic embodiments shown herein, but that extensive deviations from the illustrated forms or embodiments of the invention may be made without departing from the principles thereof.
We claim:
l. A bed guard of the character described comprising a plurality of spaced side boards arranged to extend along opposite sides of a mattress which is supported on a spring, a crosspiece extending from one side board to the other and passing between the mattress and the spring, and means connecting the rear terminals of the side boards to give rigidity to the same, the side boards being of lesser length than the mattress and being of greater height than the same.
2. A bed guard of the character 4described comprising a plurality of spa-ced side boards arranged to extend along opposite sides of a mattress which is suppo-rted on a spring, a plurality of cross-pieces of exible material extending from one side board to the other and arranged to pass between the mattress and the spring, and means connecting the rear terminals of the side boards to give rigidity to the same, such means comprising a head board and detachable fastening means for securing the members to- 3 gether, the side boards being of lesser length than the mattress and being of greater height than the same.
3. A bed guard of the character described -comprising a plurality of spaced side boards arranged to extend along opposite sides of a, mattress which is supported on a spring, cross pieces extending frQm one sideboard, tto.'y the. other and arrangedrto ypass.,between the mattress and; the spring and means comprising a head board connecting the rear terminals of the side boards tdY1 give rigidity to the same, the side boards being of lesser length than the mattress and beings-ot greater height than the same.
4. A bed guard of the character des;rilied comprising a plurality of spacedsideboards arranged to extend along opposite sides-of= a mat--` tress which is supported on a spring,\ ai rQgss 4 the mattress and being of greater height than the same.
5. A bed guard of the character described comprising a plurality of spaced side boards arranged to extend along opposite sides of a mattress which is supported on a spring provided with a head board, a cross piece extending from 011e Sidebgatdtathe other, andlarnansed to pass between hemettress andthe springend means extending to the rear of the head board connesting the rear terminals of the side boards to giyvev rigidity to the same, the side boards being cfg lesser length than the mattress and being of gametes eeienttlian the Same- J OSEPHINE DI BELLA HERZ.
