Application filed September 27, 1920.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Crmnnns H. BOARD- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and @tate of @hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Crib and Bed Construction, of which the following is a specification.
T]. is invention relates to improvements in a combined crib and bed construction, and has for its object to provide a bed particularly adapted for infants and children, wherein removable side frames are provided which may be quickly attached to the head and foot members of the bed for the purpose of enabling the latter to be employed as a crib, and said side frames being provided with fastening means which enable the frames to be readily detached from connection with the head and foot members in order that the bed will present a standard and conventional appearance when the crib features are omitted.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved fastening structure between the side frames and the head and foot members, said fastening structure serving to retain the side frames in locked relationship with the bed irrespective of the bearing forces to which the frames and head and foot members may be subjected; in forming said fastening structure so thatthe same will be mortised within the side frames and out of the way, so that their use will not be likely to injurethe occupants of the bed.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention accordingly consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts, hereinafter to be fully described and to have the scope thereof pointed out in the apppended claims. I
In the accompanying drawing. forming a part of this specification, and in which similar characters of reference denote like and corresponding parts:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the combined crib and bed structure comprising-the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a detailed vertical sectional view taken through the locking mechanism employed for connecting the side frames with the head, and foot members.
3 a transverse vertical sectional Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ll-fay it, 1921.
Serial No. ll-3AM.
View taken along the line 3-8 of Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the locking structure.
Referring more particularly to the details of the invention, the numeral 1 designates my improved bed structure in its entirety. This bed structure is formed to combine both the features of the ordinarv'crib and the average bed, in order that when purchased, its use will not be limited merely to use as a crib but may be readily trans formed, by the removal of certain parts into an average childs bed. To this end, the bed structure consists of a head member 2, a foot n'iember 3 and connecting longitudinally extending side boards 4. These parts are all of standard construction, and may be formed from any suitable materials and of any desired design or configuration.
When the bed is employed as a crib, use is made of a plurality of removable side frames 5, which in this instance are formed to include spaced longitudinal bars 6 which are connected by means of vertical rungs 7. To detachably mount the side frames in operative relation with the bed structure, the under faces of. the lower bar 6 are provided with a plurality of depending dowel pins which are arranged to be received within longitudinally spaced openings 9 provided in the upper surfaces of the side boards 4;. By this construction the side frames may be readily assembled in connection with the bed structure anc supported in such positions as to permit of their being locked in connection. with the head and foot members.
To permit of the locking of the frames, the upper bars 6 thereof have their extreme outer ends provided with mortised recesses 10, which are closed by means of metallic plates 11 and 12, the latter being also mortised within the upper bars 6 so that said bars will present somewhat a well finished exterior surface, in which buttons are elimi nated. In each locking structure, the plate 11 thereof is provided with a boss 13 in which is journaled the inner end of an actuating shaft 14. This shaft is provided centrally with a square portion 15 upon which is mounted an oscillatory bolt member 16. Also, the shaft 14: is journaled within a boss 17 provided in the plate 12, and the extreme outer end of said shaftis provided with a pivoted handle 18, which normally lies within a socket 19 provided in the plate 12. By virtue of the socket 19, the handle 18 may be employed and positioned in such manner as to lie within the confines of the bars 6. It will be manifest, however, that by swinging the handle 18 outwardly, the same may be conveniently grasped to effect the rotation of the shaft 14- and the consequent manipulation of the bolt 16.
T his bolt is adapted to be positioned within the recess and is capable of being projected through an opening provided in a metallic end plate 21 situated to cover the end of the recess 10. Also each of the head and foot members has the posts thereof formed with recesses 22, which are covered by means of metallic plates These plates 23 are provided with openings 2%, which are designed to register with the openings 20 provided in the plates .21, whereby the look ing members may be projected through the registering openings. By this construction, the rotation of the handle 18 will rocl; the shaft 14L so tha; the bolt members 16 will be projected through the alined openings 20 and 2% in such manner that the outer finger provided upon the bolt member will be positioned within the recess 22 and immedi ately behind the plate 23, the finger 25 being provided upon the bolt member by forming a recess 26 within the latter. This construction results in securely locking the side frames 5 to the head and foot members, and this locking is accomplished in such manner that it will be impossible to disconnect the side frames by means of longitudinally directed pressures upon the head or foot members, or by lateralpressures upon the side frames or by vertical. pressures applied to the side frames. It will therefore be obvious that wien the side frames are applied, an infant will be securely confined within the bed structure and will be prevented from accidentally disconnecting said side frames from the head and foot members. Also it will be observed that the actuating handles 18 of the locking mem bers are positioned on the outside of the bars 6 and are locked within sockets, a feature which renders such handles relatively inaccessible and prevents their operation except by persons of some understanding.
To maintain the locking men'ibers or the locking bolts 16 in. their extended positions, each of said bolts 16 is provided with a flat face 2?. which is designed to cooperate with a flat leaf spring 28, said spring operating upon the bolt in such manner as to maintain the latter in its extended position connecting. the side frames with the head and foot members. Similarly said members 16 may be provided with a second face 29 also d signed for engagement with the spring whereby when the members are rocked inwardly the same may be positioned with in the recesses 10 by the action of the springs 28. This is a feature which renders it possible to conveniently position the side frames upon the boards and then to effect the locking of the frames in such applied positions.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be observed that a bed structure is provided which may be conveniently used both as a crib and as a childs bed. When employed as a bed the same will present certain conventional lines, which will not be marred by the use of the fastening means employed for connectingthe side frames. The loclr construction described is particularly effective in securely holding the side frames in their positions of application, and it will be observed that pressure may be up plied to the members of the bed in any direction without permitting of the rel use or disconnection of the side frames. This feature makes the bed substantial in construction. and particularly capable of preventing an infant contained therein from accidentally falling out, such as might happen if the frames were to become unduly disconnected.
l l hat is claimed is:
1. In a bed of the class described. spaced head and foot n'iembers, a side f'amc positioned between said members, a lock for connecting said side frames with said memhere, said lock con'iprising a hook shaped loclc member pivotally mounted within a recess formed in one of the ends of said frames a keeper plate having an opening formed therein carried by one of said menu bers and arranged to receive the hook shaped. locking extremities of said lock member. an actuating shaft for said lock member, and a spring for maintaining said loclr member in active or inactive positions.
2. In a bed, spaced head and foot meml irs, a detachable frame arranged to be p0 sitioned between said members. means for locking said frame in connection with at least one of members, comprising a locking structure including pair of side plates inset in one end of said frame to lie flush with the sides thereof, one of said plates being provided with an inwardly e. tending recess. a shaft rotatably carried by said plates, a locking device rotatable with said shaft and positioned between said plates. an apertured keeper plate carried by one of said members and situated to receive said locking device when the latter is projected to a locking position, and a pivoted handle carried by one end of said shaft and arranged to be normally positioned within the recess of one of said plates.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES H. BOARDMAN.
