. Application filed. January 6,1925. Serial 1T0. Z60.
This invention relates to improvements in looks.
It is anobject of the invention to provide an improved look having tumblers, in which means is provided whereby -when.' one of the tumblers islifted into open or unlocking .posit-ion, acorresponding tumbler will be urged thereby into locking position. ,By
thisconstruction it is "desired to provide a lock which cannot be pickedll r With the, foregoing and otherIobject-sin view which will be made, manifest in the following .detailed description and pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodimentof the invention, wherea Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference-characters designate similar parts throughout, the improved lock consists of a body 10, which may be hollow as indicated at 11, or'o any other suitable structure. A cylindrical opening 12 is formed in the body in'which there is rotatably mounted a cylinder'13; The cylinder. '13 has a keyway or key' passage 14:
formed therein adapted to receive akeyK.
A suitable lever'15 is mounted upon the rear of the cylinder 13 as byscrews16, which' lever is operatively connected with a latch or bolt 17 so that when the cylinder 13 is rotated, the latch or bolt may be thrown into' 1 Tumblers slots 18 are formed in the cylinder 13 and looking or unlocking position.
these tumbler slots communicate with the keyway' '14. Additional tumbler slots 19 are formed in the body 10 and are adapted to register with the tumbler. slots 18. Pref- I v erably when the body 10 is hollow, suitable bosses 20 are formed about the tumbler slots 19 to provide additional bearing surface for the upper tumblers 21. Lower tumblers 22 are disposed Withinthe tumbler slots 18 and the. upper and lower tumblers are adapted to slide within the tumbler slots upon en'- gagement with the key K to assume unlock ing position,=as shown in Fig. 1.
improved v v I ment inserted in the keyway 14: other than viding meanswhereby when one of the tum-J blers or sets of tumblers is raised to unlockiugposition, a corresponding tumbler is 6'6 resiliently or yieldably urged into locking position "so as to prevent-picking of the. 100K by raising some of the tumblers by an. instrument other than the proper key. a
The upper tumblers 211are provided with grooves or slots 23 which grooves receive the ends of springs 24; Suitableaperture's I 25' are torrnedin', the body 10 andfextend transversely thereacross. Pins 26*are se-f cured within these apertures and the springs Q-ieonstituting resilient levers are pivoted. upon the pins '26: Illi116- preferred form alternate tumblers, ;,although it is to be considered within the. scope ofthis invention to so' arrange thesprings 24 that they may engage upon adjacent turnblers.
If the lower and upper tumblers adjacent of construction, the .springs 24; engage the irontof the lock are lifted-by an instru-, 1 i
[the key K, the upper and lower tumblers I which are third from the. front 'ofthe lockwill be urged downwardly or into locking position. It will, therefore, be readily understood that in order to unlock the lock, it is necessary that all of the tumblersbe lifted the proper distanceagainst the-action ofthe springs 24and that this can only be accdmplished by insertingthe properkey K. The
tumblers maybe inserted intofthe look I no I through suitable openings 27 which may be afterwards closed, if desired. 7
Another feature. of this lnventionresides in mounting balls 28 within the body of each of the lowermost tumblers 22. The balls 28 are held within the tumblers andfare rotatable therein. The object ofthe balls 28is.
to decrease the friction uponinsertingthe key K; it being" understood that if'the balls 28-were not present, the friction in the im proved lock would be considerably greater due to the action of the springs 24 than if ,Itfi'sl to be understood that various changes inth detail f construction maybe k prising a bodypa cylinder rotatable in said body, a keyway formed in Y 7 said cylinder, tumbler slots formed in said" A feature of the invention resides in pro the tumblers fell under theiorce of. gravity.
cylinder and in said body one behind the cylinder and in said body one rearWardly of another along thekeyway, upper and lower tumblers shdable in said tumbler slots, springs pivoted Within said body, each spring alternate tumblers, and
grooves formed in said upper tumblers adapted to receive the ends of said springs.
3. A look comprising a body, a cylinder rotatable in said body, tumbler slots formed in said body and cylinder in longitudinal alignment, tumblers disposed within said slots, at key receivable Within said cylinder for movin said tumblers into such position as to permit rotation of said cylinder Within the body, and a pivoted resilient lever n ounted Within said body having its ends engagin separate tumblers and urging them into locking position.
4. A look comprising a body, a member movably mounted in said body, tumbler slots formed in said body and member, one behind the other longitudinally of said member, tumblers Within said slots, a key receivable in said member for moving the tumblers into unlocking position, whereby said member may be moved Within said body, and a pivoted resilient lever disposed Within. said body engageable upon tWo of the tumblers urging them into locking position.
5. A. lock comprising a body, a member movably mounted in said body,- tumbler slots formed in said body and member, one behind the other longitudinally of said member, tumblers Within said slots, a key receivable in said member for moving the tumblers into unlocking position, whereby said membeig may be moved Within said body, and a pivoted resilient lever disposed Within said body engageable upon two of the tumblers, between which a third tumbler is positioned, urging them into lockingposition.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ARTHUR E. ANAKIN.
