K. MAKSYM.
SAFETY LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 26. 1920.
Patented Feb. 22, 1921.
INVENTOR ,4 TTORIVEY r cm i KONSTANTY MAKSYM, OF WOODI-IAVEN, NEW YORK SAFETY-LOCK.-
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 22, 1921.
Application filed April 26, 1920. Serial No. 376,468.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KONSTANTY MAKsYM, citizen of the United States, and resident of Voodhaven, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Locks, of which the following is a.
specification.
This invention relates to safety locks, and has for its main object the provision of a lock peculiar in construction and which may be opened only by a key having aparticular construction.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my lock with the key in place.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational View of the lock.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevationalview of the same.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view in section, of the same.
Referring now in detail to the drawings,
the numeral 1 represents the main frame of my lock, which is provided with corner holes 2 by means of which the lock may be attached to a door or door frame. A slot 3 is provided as shown in said frame 1 for the purpose of aiding in the assembling of the lock; this slot does not form any part of the principle of my invention.
A rear frame or casing 5 is attached to the frame 1, and a bolt 14 slides horizontally therein. Circular recesses 11 and 12 are provided. in said bolt, adaptedto be engaged respectively by the pins 11 and 12 of the key 9. A hole 4: is provided through both frames 1 and 5 for the passage of said key 9, which comprises a stem having a slotted recess 15 near the end thereof. A member 10 is pivoted to said stem at the end of said slot, and said member is adapted to fold into said slot; said'member bein provided with said aforementioned rigic pins 11 and 12.
A leaf spring 13 is attached to the rear frame 5 and its free end covers the hole 4.-. Upon insertion of the key 9 into said hole, the spring 13 is tensioned as shown in Fig. 1. Circular arcs 6 and 7 are provided in the frame 5, said pins 11 and 12 being adapted to move in said arcuate paths. The ends of the paths 8 are enlarged, as at 8.
A recess 18 is provided in the bolt lain which rests a coiled spring 17.' A pin 19 having a flattened and widened end 16 rests with the latter end against the spring 17, the pin end protruding through the hole 11 A- handle 15 is rigid to said pin and projects downward below the frame 5.
In operation, the key 9 is inserted into the hole 4, the member 10 being folded against the stem of the key before and during said insertion. As soon as the ke' will have advancedsufiiciently into said hole, the member 10 will swing downwardlyupon its pivot. Thereupon the key is drawn outward a short distance whence the pins 11 and 12 will enter the arcs 6 and 7. Thereupon the key is turned until the fingers or pins 11 and 12 engage the recesses 11" and 12 into which said pins then fall and thus secure a grip on the bolt 14. .Then the said bolt is withdrawn from its locked position by reverse turning of said key.
When the bolt is in'its locked position, the pin 19 lies in one of the enlarged ends 8 of the arc7. As is apparent, on drawing the key outward against the frame 5, the
pin 11 will force the pin 19 against the spring 17, thus releasing the bolt. However, when the lock is to be opened from within (the house or whatever it may be) the handle 15 is pressed in against the lock, thus releasing the bolt, and the said handle said casing, arcuate slots in said casing, re-
cesses in said bolt,"a key having fingers adapted to be inserted into said recesses through said arcuate slots.
2. A device of'the class described comprisinga casing, a bolt slidably mounted in said casing, arcuate slots in said casing,
recesses in said bolt a key having fingers adapted to be inserted into said recesses through saidarcuate slots, and means for locking said bolt comprising a pin resiliently mounted in said bolt, and means for releasing said locking means.
5 3. A device ofthe class described comprising a casing, a bolt slidably mounted in said caslng, arcuate slots in said casing, I
recesses in said bolt, a key having fingers adapted to be inserted into said recesses 10 through said arcuate slots, said key comprising a stem and a member adapted to be folded into said stem, said fingers bein on said member, means for locking said bolt, and resilient means for urging said fingered member against said casing. i 15 Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 12th day of April A. D. 1920.7
