B. G. FRY ETAL' SAFETY DOOR LOCK Filed Feb. 25, 1924 Patented Apr. 6, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BYRON G. FRY, OF GLENDALE, AND DELIA B. RAWSON, F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY DOOR LOCK.
Application filed February 25, 1924. Serial No. 694,958.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BYRON G. FRY and DELIA B. RAwsoN, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Glendale and'Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to safety door locks,
and more particularly to a simple pocket device which can be conveniently carried in the pocket, or hand bag, and readily applied to a door as it is closed for the purpose of preventing the door from being opened from the opposite side. It is particularly useful in hotels and boarding houses and can be applied to doors without any cutting or boring of the door or the door frame and without leaving any mark on the door.
In order to more clearly explain our invention, we have shown the same on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which we will now describe.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of our invention, with the door frame and lock plate indicated in light broken lines;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the door in closed condition, with the lock in place for looking it closed; and
Figure 3 is a detail view of the holding pin.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1, designates a lock plate, provided with the holes, 2, 2, and the angle ear, 3, with a hole therethrough as at 4, to receive a holding pin, 5, shown of split form and bent to an angle, as at 5-. It can be attached by means of a small chain, 6, if desired, to the lock plate 1, as indicated. Said lock plate at its inner end is provided with a projection, shown to be two struck out or stamped lugs, as at 1' 1*, adapted to be inserted into the bolt recess 7, in the door frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, when said lock plate 1 is put flatwise in place. This prevents said lock plate 1 from being pulled straight out lengthwise, as will be readily understood. The door is closed on said lock plate 1, as will be understood from Fig. 2 A latch or holding member, 8, is adapted to be placed on said lock plate 1, and has an angle ear, 8, adapted to rest against the face of the door, D, as shown, said member 8 being also provided with holes, 8, adapted to register with the holes, 2, in the lock plate 1, as it is put in place in the manner indicated in Fig. 2. The holding pin 5, through the angle ear 3, is then inserted through the lock plate, 1, and the holding member 8, as shown. The split angle portions of said holding pin 5, yieldingly hold the same in place in the holes, as will be readily understood from the showing in Fig. 2. In order to release the lock, it is only necessary to swing the outer end of said holding pin 5, forwardly so as to move the split angle part 5 thereof out of the holes 2 and 8, and the door can be readily opened, moving the member 8 along the lock plate 1, or sald member 8 can be removed by hand before the door is pulled open. It will be seen that when the lock'is in place, as illustrated in Fig. 2, that said door D, cannot be opened, for the lock plate 1, is held between the edge of the door and the door frame, and it can not be tilted to release its holding lugs l, for the reason that its inner end projects beyond the edge of the door-bolt hole 7 as seen in Fig. 1.
Thus we have provided a very simple, economical and efficient safety lock for doors, and while we have illustrated only one form of our invention 0n the accompanying drawings, we are aware that changes can be made in details without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we do not limit the invention to the showing made, except as we may be limited ed to bear flatwise against a door when and said slideholdingmemher,substantially closed and having holes to register with the as described. holes in said plate member, and a pin in- Signed at Los Angeles, Los Angeles 10 serted through the hole in the angle part County, California, this 15th day of Febru- 5 of said plate member and having its inner ary, 192%.
end bent to an angle to be inserted through BYRON G. FRY. the registering holes in said plate member DELIA. B. RAWSGX.
