SEPARABLE KEY Filed May 27,1929
Patented May 26, 1931 UNITED STATES THEODORE A. MAKRANCZY, F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIAA` SEPARABLE KEY Application filed May 27, 1929. Serial No. 366,505.
This invention aims to provide simple means whereby unauthorized persons may be prevented from picking or cracking a tumbler lock of any kind whatsoever, whereunto the device forming the subject matter of this application is applicable. The invention aims to provide a device capable of being inserted into a lock for moving some of the tumy blers to locked position, the device including one part, which is left in the lock, and another part which is carried away by the operator.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made withs in the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the body;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the handle;
Figure 4 is an elevationwherein the body is viewed edgewise;
Figure 5 is a top plan of the complete dei inner end thereof there is a keeper' 5, preferably in the form of a small transverse openinv.
In practical operation, the body 1 and the handle 6 are held together by the latch lever 14, and the body 1 is thrust into a lock. The finger 9 is housed, for protection, behind the wing 4, as shown in Fig. 5, and extends across the notch 2, and, consequently,` all of the tumblers 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22 will be supported, as shown in Figure 1, the tumblers 18 and 19 resting on the edge of the wing 4, the tumbler 20 being supported by the iinger 9, the tumbler 21 being supported by the tooth 3, and the tumbler 22 being supported on the arm 7. The operator tilts the lever 14 and withdraws the projection 15 from the keeper 5. Then, the handle 6 can be pulled off of the body 1, the arm 7 and the finger 9 being removed along with the handle. This permits the tumbler 20 to drop down into the notch 2 of the body 1, and permits the tumbler 22 to drop down on the body 1, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. The result is that the lock is in locked position, the body 1 cannot be withdrawn, and it is impossible to put a key in the lock. Absolute security thus is insured until the handle 6 again is assembled with the body 1, whereupon the tumblers 20 and 22 are raised, it being possible to pull the body 1 of the key out of the lock, the body being connected to the handle 6.
I claim 1. A key comprising a body and a handle,
the handle having an arm constituting a tumbler-actuator, the arm being removable from the body, along With the handle to permit a lock tumbler' to assume a locking position, and a latch mechanism movably mounted on the handle and engaging the body to hold the body and the handle releasably together.
2. A key comprising a body having a Wing,
and provided with a tooth spaced from thea Wing longitudinally of the body to form a notch, the tooth being` thinner than the Wing, and a handle provided with an arm, the arin having a recess defining a thinned finger at4 the end of the arm, the combined thickness of the iner and the tooth approximating the thickness of the Wing, the finger extending across the tooth at the side of the tooth, and substantially across the notch, the linger being housed behind the Wing, and means for holding the body and the handle releasably together.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto alixed my signature.
THEODORE A. lt/IAKRANCZY.
