JAMES E. MATTHEWS, 0F FARRELL, PENNSYLVANIA.
PADLOCK-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Application filed November 8, 1918. Serial No. 261,668.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. MATTI-ruws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farrell, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Padlock-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for padlocks and has for its object the provision of a guard formed as an open sided casing disposable over the body and shackle of a padlock and so constructed as to take up the shock of a blow struck upon the lock in an endeavor to spring the same.
An important object is the provision of a guard of this character formed as an open sided casing having extending thereacross a permanently associated'rivet or stud movable within slots in the sides of the casing, this rivet or stud being engageable with the shackle of the padlock .for holding the cas ing associated therewith.
A further object is the provision of a guard of this character which will be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, efiicient in its protective action, durable in use and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a padlock in open position and showing my device associated therewith but not secured in position.
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the lock in closed position and my device applied thereto.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view detached.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the letter A designates a padlock of ordinary construction including the ordinary pivoted shackle B. In carrying out my invention I provide a casing 10 of a size and shape to fit upon the padlock and engageable thereon when the shackle is in its open position. This casing 10 has its major portion formed rectangular and has an extension 11 having a curved back wall 12 which merges into the rear wall 13 and terminates at substantially the center line of the casing so that the front of the casing will be open as of my device shown. The sides of the casing 10 are provided adjacent their lower portions with openings 15 permitting the insertion of the key into the body of the padlock. Adjacent the rear wall 13, the sides of the casing 10 are provided with elongated slots 16 through which extend the ends of a transverse rivet or stud 17 which has its extremities upset as shown to provide enlarged heads preventing displacement of the rivet or stud from the slot 16.
In order to prevent the device from becoming lost I preferably provide a chain 18 connected with one corner of the casing 10 and connected with some convenient portion of the lock A.
The use of the device is as follows: While the shackle B of the lock is in its open position my device is associated therewith by engaging the casing 10 over the lock with the shackle B disposed between the curved back wall 12 and the slidable stud 17. After my device is thus applied, the shackle B is engaged within the usual staple C and sprung to its locking position. lhe shackle B will then be confined between the curved wall 12 of the casing and the stud 17 and the casing 10 cannot therefore be removed from the lock. IVhen my device is in position any attempt to spring the lock by hammermg upon cessful for the reason that the force of a blow against the casing would have its effect on the upper part of the shackle B instead of against the edge of the lock itself. ()wing to the provision of the slot 16 the stud 17 may slide upwardly through the slot so that a blow struck upon the casing 10 cannot force the stud 17 into engagement with the top of the body of the lock.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a guard attachment for padlocks which will form an effective protection for the lock and prevent it from being sprung open as the result of a blow adminlstered upon the outside edge thereof.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will of course be readily understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, and construction as will not depart from the spirit of the invention nor the scope of the subjoined claims.
the casing 10 will be unsuc-' Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A guard for padlocks comprising a casing open at one edge andha'v'ing a'p'o'rtion of its closed edge curved for conforming engagement With the shackle of the lock, the sides of said casing being provided with openings permitting the passage of a key therethrough, and a slidable stud extending transversely of said casing at a point spaced from" said curved Wall.
A padlockguard comprising a casing V open'at oneedgeandhaving its other edge closed and formed as a curved Wall con forniingly engageable with the shackle of a. lok,'said open edge of said casing being Copies of this patent may be obtained forzfive cents each, by addressing the the sides cut away for the accommodation of the staple engaged by the lock, the sides of said casing being provided With openings permitting the passage of a key therethrough,
of said casing being provided adjacent said curved wall With elongated slots, and a headed stud extending transversely of said casing and slidable along said slots.
3. A guard forpadlocks comprising a casing open at one edge, and having a portion of its closed edge conforniingly engageable With the shackle of the lock, and a stud extending transversely of said casing at a point spaced from said closed edge.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
