SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 732,417, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed April 20, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. JUDD, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leg Irons or Shackles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a top or plan View of a pair of leg-irons or shackles constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a top or plan view of a full-size leg-iron with the top plate or cap removed,showing the arm in its locked position; Fig. 3, a plan view of the key therefor; Fig. 4, a View similar to Fig. 2 with the key-post turned and the dog in its unlocked Fig. 5, a broken sectional view through the chamber at the locking end of the case.
This invention relates to an improvement in leg-irons or shackles, the object of the invention being a simple arrangement of parts whereby the leg-irons or shackles may be readily applied and securely locked and conveniently opened with a suitable key; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
In illustrating my invention it is shown on the scale usually employed for leg-irons or.
shackles. The shackles are arranged in pairs connected by a suitable chain, and, as herein shown, each member consists of a body or case A, to which an eye 2 is swiveled, which eyes are connected bya chain 4. To one end of the case, upon a pivot or post 5, one end 6 of an arm 7 is mounted, the outer end of the arm 7 being provided with locking-notches 8 in the usual manner, and this arm is adapted to pass through a recess 9 inthe end of the case opposite to which the arm is pivoted. In this end of the case is a chamber 10, in which a key-hub 11 is mounted, the key-hub consistingof a straight rod with a keyslot 12. This key-hub extends through one side of the case and the slot 12 registers with a notch Serial No. 153,360. (No model.)

Projecting outward from one side of the post is a stud 14, and in the case is a pin 15, parallel with the key-post and adjacent thereto and against which the stud 14 will strike when the key-hub is in its normal position and the slot 12 and notch 13 register with each other. In order to prevent the key-hub from turning when the key is removed, a friction-spring 16 is employed,
which is mounted upon a post 17 and bears against one side of the key-hub, so as to produce sufficient friction to prevent the hub from turning except when moved by the key. WVithin the chamber and adjacent to the recess 9 therein and upon a post 18 is a dog 19, adapted to engage with the notches 8 in the springarm 7 for'holding that arm in its closed position. This dog is formed with an inwardly-projecting tail 20, and to normally hold'the dog in its thrown position I employ a wire spring 21, which is mounted upon the post 18 and at its end engaging with the tail 20. Between the key-hub and the dog is a lever 22, mounted upon a pivot 23 so as to turn thereon and formed with a finger 24, projecting toward the key-hub, and an arm 25, projecting upward in the path of the tail of the dog. In the case is a stop-pin. 26, against which the finger 24 will strike when the dog is in its normal position. Over one side of thecase and so as to close the chambers and recesses therein and secure the arm 7 in position is a cap-plate 27, which is secured to the case and gives a finished appearance thereto. The key 28 is a fiat sheet metal key adapted to be entered into the key-slot 12 when it is in line with the notch 13, the shank of the key having a clearancenotch 29 to turn the key-hub. The key is also formed with a ward 30, which as the hub is rotated clears the stop-pin 26, and, striking the finger 24 of the lever 22, turns the lever and causes the arm 25.to move the dog 19 out of engagement with the notches S in the arm 7, thus leaving the arm free to be swung outward to open the shackle. As the key is turned for removal the spring 21 throws the dog into its locking position, and this dog turns the lever 22 until the finger 24 thereof .comes into engagement with the stop-pin 26. As before stated, when the keyhub is in position to receive the key the stud 14 on the hub bears against the pin 15 and where it is held by the friction-spring 16. In closing the arm 7 the dog yields, permitting the notches 8 to pass, but resists movement in the opposite direction.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class mentioned, the combination with the case thereof, of an arm hinged thereto and formed with lockingnotches, of a spring-dog )ivoted in the case and adapted to engage with the said notches, a key-hub free to turn in the case, a lever pivoted in the case between the key-hub and dog, said lever formed with an arm in engagem ent with said dog, and a finger adapted to be turned by a ward on the key, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class mentioned, the combination with the case thereof, of an arm pivoted thereto, said case having a recess at having an arm in engagement with the tail of the dog and formed with a finger adapted to bear against a stop-pin in the case when in its normal position, said lever adapted to be turned by a ward on the key bearing directly against it, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class mentioned, the combination with the case thereof, of an arm pivoted thereto, said case having a recess at one end through which the free end of the arm may pass, a dog mounted in said chamber in position to engage with the notches on said arm, a key-hub adapted to be rotated by a key, a stud on said hub and a pin with which it may engage when the key-hub is in its normal position, a lever pivotally mounted in the chamber between the key-hub and dog, said lever having an arm in engagement with the tail of the dog and with a finger adapted to bear against a stop-pin in the case when in its normal position, said lever adapted to be turned by a ward on the key, and a frictionspring bearing against said hub and tending to hold the key-hub in its normal position after the key is removed, substantially as described.
