s. SEGAL PADLOCK Filed March 18, 1925 E TOR ATTCYNE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 C/WMML and is forced inwardly thereby until it clears the lower portion of said wall where upon it is projected into locking position and into engagement with the shoulder 20 by the action of the spring 14. It will furthermore be noted that the lower portion of the bore for the short leg 3 is provided with a plug 22 to prevent interference or manipulation with the interior mechanism oi the padlock when the shackle is in open position.
One of the sides of the body of the padlock is provided with an annular opening 23 re ceiving a plate 24 which may be soldered or otherwise permanently secured within said opening. Said plate 4 carries the ordinary or conventional barrel 25 of a pintumbler lock in which is rotatably mounted the usual key plug or cylinder 26 adapted to be rotated by a proper key inserted in the key hole. The inner end of said key plug or cylinder is provided with an annular plate 27 which is secured thereto and which acts to prevent forward withdrawal of the cylinder through the barrel. Pivotally fastened to the barrel 25 is an actuating arm 28 which is held in normal position by a spring 29. indicates a short actuating arm which is connected to or may be an integral part of the plate 27. The plate 27 also has connected thereto an arm 31 engaging the actuating arm 28. When the shackle is in closed position or the position shown in Fig. 4- and the key plug or cylinder 26 is rotated by means of the proper key the actuating arm 30 will engage the button 15 to release it 1 from engagement with the shoulder 20 and simultaneously the arm 31 will press against the actuating arm 28 and cause said arm to swing on its pivot against the action of the spring 29 whereby the upper end or head of said arm 28 will enter the slot 8 and press against the button 19 to release it from engagement with the shoulder 21. The shackle will thereupon be thrown into open position by the spring 12 in the manner previously described.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. '6 to 10 inclusive I mount the pin-tumbler barrel which is indicated at 32 in the bottom of the body or casing of the padlock and fasten it thereto in any manner. The end of the key plug or cylinder is indicated at 3.3. The plate which is fastened to the inner end of the key plug or cylinder and which prevents withdrawal of said key plug from the barrel is indicated at 34. Said plate is provided with an end having inwardly extending wallsv 35 meeting each other and, engaging an oper ating arm 36 which is pivoted as by pivot 37 to the lower ends of the walls of a slot 38 formed in the side of the barrel 32 In the modification I dispense entirely with the button or other locking means which is carried by the short leg of the shackle in the preferred form of the invention but retain the button 15 which is mounted in the long leg and 18 similar in construction with the button in the long leg of the preferred form of the invention. When the key plug 33 is rotated by thepi'oper key the operating arm 36 rides in a slot 38 due to its engagement with either of the inclined walls 35 thereby forcing the end of said operating arm against the button 15 to press said button inwardly whereby the shackle will be thrown into unlocked position by the action of the spring 12 in an obvious manner.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a padlock, a body, a shackle, a spring-pressed locking button carried by said shackle and adapted to engage said body toprevent withdrawal of said shackle from said body, a pin-tumbler barrel carried by said body and pivoted means for actuating said locking button upon rotation of said barrel. 7'
2. In a padlock, a body, a shackle having two legs adapted to enter said body, a looking device carried by each of said legs for preventing withdrawal of said shackle from said body and means for simultaneously actuating said devices to permit withdrawal of one of said legs from said shackle one of said locking devices acting as a stop to prevent withdrawal of the other of said legs from said body.
3. In a padlock, a body, a shackle adapted to enter said body, a locking device carried by said shackle for preventing withdrawal of said shackle from said body, a pin tumbler locking mechanism mounted in said body and means connected to said mechanism for actuatingsaid locking device. to
permit partial withdrawal of said shackle from said body, said locking device acting as a stop to prevent complete withdrawal of said shackle from said body.
4. In a padlock, a body provided with openings, a shackle adapted to enter said openings, a cam projection on said body adjacent one of said openings and a springpressed locking button on said shackle adapted to engage said projection when said shackle is brought into closed position.
5. In a padlock, a body provided with openings therein and having a chamber communicating with one of said openings said chamber being provided with an inclined wall adjacent its lower end, a shackle adapted to enter said openings, a springpressed locking button carried by said shackle and adapted to engage the lower side of said chamber to hold the shackle plete removal of said shackle from said body and to ride against said inclined wall when theshackle is pressed into closed position.
6. In a padlock, a body provided with openings therein, a shackle adapted to enter said openings, a locking element carried by said shackle and adapted to engage said body to prevent removal of said shackle from said body, a pin-tumbler lock mechanism mounted in said body and an arm connected to said mechanism and adapted to actuate said locking element to permit said shackle to be brought into open position.
7. In a padlock, a body provided With openings therein, a shoulder on said body, a shackle adapted to enter said openings, a spring pressed button carried by said shackle and adapted to engage said shoulder to prevent removal of said shackle from said body, a pinetumbler lock mechanism mounted in said body, an operating arm connected to said pin-tumbler lock mechanism and adapted to actuate said button to release it from engagement With said shoulder whereby said shackle may be brought into open position.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 17th day 25 of March A. D. 1925.
