No. 453,453 Claims priority, application Great Britain, May 26, 1964, 21,669/ 64; .lune 2, 1964, 22,713/ 64 Claims. (Cl. 5-347) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mattress comprising a resilient plastic pad provided with large air holes through the head-supporting part, a textile sleeve enclosing the head-supporting part, and a plastic sleeve covering the remainder of the pad.
This invention relates to mattresses, in particular mattresses for perambulators or costs, or for beds for invalids.
Generally, the mattress comprises a resilient pad of plastic material, said pad having a series of perforations constituting the air holes extending only between the top and bottom surfaces of the pad at that part of the pad intended to support the head of the user, the remainder of said pad being imperforate, an air permeable sleeve open at one end enclosing the head-supporting part of the pad, and an impermeable elastomeric sleeve open at one end enclosing the remainder of the pad.
The perforations in the pad are -conveniently arranged to be as extensive as possible while not interfering with the resilience and comfort of the mattress. In a particular form, the perforations are large, being of the order of half an inch to one inch in diameter.
The air-permeable textile material of the sleeve may be of any textile material and conveniently of an open weave cellular cotton cloth.
The impermeable sleeve is conveniently of a plastic material and is provided with an open end adapted to receive the imperforate portion of the pad. If desired, the material of the impermeable material may be patterned.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
FIG. 1 shows a cot mattress complete,
FIG. 2 shows the mattress with the impermeable sleeve removed,
FIG. 3 shows the interior pad of the mattress with both sleeves removed.
`Referring to FIGS. 1-3, the mattress consists of a pad 5 of expanded plastic material consisting of two or more ice laminae Sa, 5b and having in the portion intended to snpport the head large perforations 6 forming air holes and which render the pad air-permeable while maintaining the requisite degree of comfort. An open mesh cotton sleeve 7 having an open end is located over the perforated end of the pad and a plastic sleeve 8 of impermeable material having an open end is located over the other imperforate end of the pad so that the open end of the textile sleeve 7 is received within the open end of the plastic sleeve 8.
With such an arrangement as that herein described, should a childs or invalids face become pressed against the portion of the mattress for supporting the head, the risk of sufocation is greatly reduced. Further, with the face against the textile material of the pad the possibility of chaing of the skin is reduced. Also, as the components of the mattress are detachable they may be readily washed in the interests of hygiene.
What is claimed is:
1. A mattress comprising a resilient pad of expanded plastic material, said pad having a series of perforations constituting air holes extending only between the top and bottom surfaces of the pad at that part of the pad intended to support the head of a user, the remainder of said pad being imperforate, an air-permeable textile sleeve open at one end enclosing the head-supporting part of the pad, and an impermeable elastomeric sleeve open at one end enclosing the remainder of the pad.
2. The mattress as claimed in claim 1, in which the expanded plastic material is polyurethane.
3. The mattress as claimed in claim 1, in which the pad includes two layers of the expanded plastic material.
4. The mattress as claimed in claim 1, in which the perforations are from half an inch to one inch in diameter.
5. The mattress as claimed in claim 1, in which the textile sleeve is an open-weave cellular cotton cloth.
