Abstract

A waterproofed article for use as a mattress or the like comprises a resilient interior having a plurality of apertures to permit the passage of air through the interior and an external coating of a waterproof material. The coating covers the external surfaces of the interior, including the internal surfaces defining the apertures. The interior of the article is therefore completely isolated and waterproofed whilst the article still permits a flow of air through the apertures. The resilient interior may be formed from a foamed rubber polyester. The article may be prepared by dipping the resilient interior having apertures formed therethrough in a waterproofing agent. The article may be provided with a covering cloth.

Description

DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION Improvements in or relating to a waterproofed article.
THE PRESENT INVENTION relates to a waterproofed article and more particularly to a waterproofed article in the form of a mattress or the like.
It is known to provide a mattress or the like with a waterproof cover in order to protect the mattress. However, a mattress provided with such a cover does not permit the passage of air through the mattress and is therefore not suitable for use as a so-called safety mattress for children and may also cause a person lying on the mattress to sweat excessively.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved waterproofed article for use as a mattress or the like.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a waterproofed article for use as a mattress or the like comprising an interior formed from a resilient material, the interior having a plurality of apertures to permit the passage of air through the resilient material and being covered in a waterproof material, the waterproof material covering the external surfaces of the resilient material and the internal surfaces defining said apertures.
Preferably the apertures are of circular crosssection. The apertures may have differing diameters.
Conveniently the apertures are arranged quincuncially in the article, with an aperture of relatively small diameter being positioned centrally within four apertures of relatively large diameter.
Alternatively the apertures may be arranged with apertures of a relatively large diameter being arranged in a regular array and apertures having a relatively small diameter being arranged in a non-regular array.
Advantageously the interior of the article is in the form of a prismatic block formed from a foamed rubber polyester material.
Preferably the waterproof material is applied by means of a dipping process such that the exterior of the article does not possess any folds or seams.
The article may be provided with a covering cloth.
According to a second aspect of this invention there is provided a method of forming a waterproofed article for use as a mattress or the like, the method comprising the steps of taking a resilient material and forming apertures therein to permit the passage of air through the resilient material; and covering the resilient material with a waterproof material, the waterproof material covering the external surfaces of the article and the internal surfaces defining the apertures.
Preferably the waterproof material is applied by dipping the resilient material in a waterproofing agent so that the exterior of the article does not possess any folds or seams.
In order that the present invention may be more readily understood and so that further features thereof may be appreciated, the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a partly cutaway perspective view of a waterproofed article in accordance with this invention.
The drawing illustrates an article 1 of generally prismatic shape in the form of a sheet or block 2 of foamed rubber polyester material. The block 2 is provided with a plurality of circular apertures 3 which extend through the block. The apertures comprise a regular array of relatively large diameter apertures and an irregular distribution of relatively small diameter apertures. It is to be appreciated however that the arrangement of the apertures may be different to that illustrated in the drawing. The apertures may be arranged quincuncially, with a smaller central aperture surrounded by four apertures. The block 2 is provided with a waterproof covering 4 which covers all exposed surfaces of the block, including the internal surfaces defining the apertures 3.Thus, the foamed rubber material is fully encapsulated within the waterproof covering 4.
The article may be rendered waterproof by dipping the foam rubber block 2 into a liquid waterproofing agent or into a bath of a waterproofing product or by any other appropriate means. Any appropriate waterproofing agent may be used. When the article is rendered waterproof by dipping the foamed rubber block into a waterproofing agent, a mattress can be produced having an outer surface which is completely free from folds and seams and is therefore readily cleanable without there being any risk of organic residues accumulating between folds or within seams. This is particularly advantageous when a mattress is to be used in a hospital environment.
The waterproofing material from which the covering 4 is formed is completely harmless to humans. A waterproofed article in accordance with this invention obviates the problems associated with materials which do not 'breath' and has numerous advantages as compared with imperforate blocks and is particularly useful for a wide variety of applications involving use by humans.
It will be appreciated that the article in accordance with this invention provides ventilation through the apertures 3 whilst at the same time being completely waterproof. Since the foamed rubber material is completely isolated it does not absorb any extraneous or foreign matter and does not become soiled or unhygienic or unfit for human use and thus the working life of a product emboded by the article is increased and its tendancy to deform is decreased.
The article according to this invention may be used to produce ventilated mattresses for cots, cradles or the like.
It may also be used for sanitary mattresses, bolsters or the like and for cushions, chairbacks and bolsters or the like for garden furniture. The article has the advantage that it can easily be cleaned using soap and water, including cleaning of the internal surfaces defining the apertures 3.
When cleaned the article can be dried rapidly.
It will be appreciated from the description given above that, although the foamed rubber polyester block or sheet 2 is waterproofed over its entire surface and is thus completely isolated, air may pass through the article via the apertures 3. In addition to providing ventilation through the article when the article is in use, the apertures 3 facilitate rapid cleaning of the article and enhance the flexibility thereof.
The passage of air through the apertures 3 is of particular importance when the article is to be used as a cot or cradle safety mattress where a flow of air through the mattress is necessary to enable transpiration by a baby sleeping upon the mattress thereby obviating excessive sweating, skin irritation or the like. In addition, when used as a cot mattress, the article is designed to obviate the risk of a baby suffocating while asleep.Whereas conventional cot and cradle mattresses are formed from blocks or sheets of material which are plasticized throughout and therefore do not permit transverse ventilation, a mattress formed from an article according to this invention ensures that if a baby or young child sleeps face down on the mattress or becomes completely covered by the bed clothes as a result of its own movements it will still be able to breath and will also not suffocate on its own vomit if sick. The mattress may, of course, be used in a baby's or young child's first bed after it has outgrown a cot or cradle.
As mentioned above mattresses formed from an article in accordance with this invention are particularly useful in hospitals or other institutions where incontinent or haemorrhaging patients are accommodated, mattresses in accordance with this invention being very adaptable to hospital beds due to their resilience.
If desired the mattress may be provided with a diaphanous loose cotton cover which facilitates the flow of air through the apertures 3 and which acts as an absorbent.
The foam rubber material from which the interior of the article is formed may itself be treated with an appropriate waterproofing agent or may be plasticized.
It is to be appreciated that the article may have an interior formed from a material other than a foamed rubber material, as long as the interior of the article is provided with apertures or pores.
Whilst the invention has been described as a mattress, it will be appreciated that the article of this invention can also be used for other applications, such as cushions, chairbacks and on the inside and the outside of items of furniture.
