Abstract
A fitted top sheet for a child's mattress includes a permeable head portion 3 and a main portion 4 formed of waterproof material, preferably having a waterproof backing and a comfortable top surface. The sheet may be used in combination with a four position yieldable pad e.g. of foam, provided at least at both ends with ventilation and drainage formations such as through holes. Alternative top sheets may be provided for use with the pad e.g. fully waterproof or flanelette/terry sheets. <IMAGE>
Description
CHILDREN'S MATTRESSES
The present invention relates to children's mattresses.
Currently there are a number of types of such mattress available, with various covering materials including PVC,
PVC/polyester mesh or cotton, and various interior constructions, for example rubberised hair, synthetic foam or sprung interiors. These mattresses all require an additional cover or top sheet in use. The cotton covered varieties need a waterproof sheet, to prevent soiling, and the PVC covered ones need a cotton, flannelette or terry sheet for comfort.
A problem which can arise with PVC covered mattresses or those used in conjunction with a waterproof sheet is that a baby may bury its face in the covering and be unable to breathe properly. Especially, should a baby be sick there is a danger that the vomit will form a puddle because it cannot drain away and the child suffocate. In order to mitigate this problem, foam cot mattresses are known, having ventilation holes at the head area and a PVC sleeve covering the remainder. The holes are designed to allow the-baby to breathe even when there is vomit present. However, such mattresses must again be used in conjunction with a top sheet, which can nullify the effect of the ventilation holes. Moreover the PVC sleeve is difficult to remove for cleaning the foam and even more difficult to replace.A further problem that can arise is that permanent indentation of the foam around the head area can develop.
According to the invention there is provided a unitary, fitted top sheet for children's mattresses comprising a permeable head portion, and a main portion formed from waterproof material, the sheet having a rear opening, preferably elasticated, through which the mattress may be removed.
The term "permeable" as used herein in relation to the sheet means capable of allowing fluid vomit to drain away and of allowing the baby to breathe. The sheet is preferably used in combination with a four-position yieldable pad forming a mattress, the pad being provided at least at both its ends with a number of through-holes extending between its upper and lower surfaces, or other formations such as slots or a contoured surface that will provide ventilation and allow vomit to drain away, the ventilation and drainage formations at each end being registrable with the permeable portion of the top sheet when fitted. Such a foam pad may be turned to use either side and/or reversed head to foot, permitting use in four orientations. In this way permanent indentation of the head area can be reduced or avoided.A further feature, forming a complete "Sleep System", is to provide an alternative fitted top sheet made entirely of waterproof material and if desired a further top sheet made of flannelette/terry for use as a child gets older and is first able to lie safely and then dry. As yet another option, a further alternative top sheet made entirely of permeable material can be provided.
A preferred embodiment of the invention in the form of a cot mattress is described below with reference to the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a foam pad for use with the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a fitted top sheet according to the present invention.
As shown in the drawings the foam pad 1 is between 7 and 10 cm thick, for sufficient comfort and made from foam conforming to the latest Government legislation regarding flame retardance, for example combustion modified high resilience foam. Ventilation holes 2, or other ventilation and drainage formations such as slots, ridges or an "egg box" surface configuration, are provided in both ends of the pad which is fully reversible. This gives four separate positions for the baby to lie and with regular turning will help to overcome any problems with indentation.
The foam pad is supplied with a fully fitted sheet according to the present invention for maximum safety that is easily removable for washing. The top end 3 is made from soft 100% polyester mesh or any other permeable material that will enable the baby to breathe even when there is vomit present. This fabric covers the holes or other formations at the head end of the pad so that should the baby be sick any vomit can pass through the material and drain through the formations, thus reducing the risk of the baby drowning in its own vomit. Should the baby turn face down, the mesh and formations can assist in reducing the risk of suffocation as the baby can continue to breathe.
Clearly the sheet may be used in conjunction with any conventional mattress provided with ventilation and drainage formations in the appropriate place to register with the permeable head portion.
The bottom end 4 of the sheet is made from a new material developed specifically for this application. It is a comfortable flannelette that has bonded to it a waterproof backing. The complete sheet is washable and is flame retardant in line with Government legislation due to be implemented on 1st March 1990. This material is waterproof, but has a top surface that is warm and comfortable so that the baby can lie directly onto the sheet so eliminating the need for additional covers.
The sheet is of fitted form for easy removal and replacement. The two ends 3 and 4 are sewn together and cover the top and sides of the pad also covering at least 50% of the back of the pad. This back edge is elasticated at 5 to ensure a good fit. Spare sheets may be made readily available from the mattress stockist, in a variety of sizes.
By constructing the sheet in this manner the combination of mattress and sheet will pass British Standard
No. 1877 Part 10 (1988) that specifies: 1. The two parts of the cover shall be joined together.
2. The back of the pad must be covered by at least 50%.
3. The hole shall be positioned over the centre of the back.
4. It must be impossible for the baby to get his head or hands under the cover when it is in position in the cot.
As the baby develops, further advantages of the system become apparent. The above described cover is ideal for young babies but as they grow older the risk of suffocation recedes and another type of cover is desirable. This alternative cover is made up from 100% of the waterproof/comfort fabric that completely covers the pad and again can easily be removed for washing.
As soon as the baby is dry at nights then a third type of cover can be used. This is a normal flannelette/terry sheet that fits in the same way as the previous two. The advantages of this system are obvious - parents need only buy one basic pad, but can easily change the type of cover, as and when their particular child is ready.
