Abstract

A quilted bag or pouch for babies is provided with a mattress (10) which is removable through an opening at the foot end (18) of the bag. A plurality of holes or apertures (22) are provided either over the entire surface or located in two zones at respective ends of the mattress. The holes or apertures (22) are designed to be large enough to let air be inhaled through the mattress by the baby in the event of its lying face down on the mattress. The mattress may be symmetrical as shown or have one rounded and one straight end. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in quilted bags or pouches for babies This invention relates to improvements in quilted bags or pouches for babies, sometimes known as "Baby Nests".
Quilted bags or pouches are generally manufactured from a fabric outer and lining with a polyester wadding filling and may have an extended base area for the baby's head. They are intended for carrying babies as the all in one bedding, maintaining warmth and ensuring minimal exposure to the elements. It is quite common nowdays for babies to be left unsupervised and even overnight inside a quilted bag or pouch.
One known type of quilted bag or pouch consists of a cotton or polyester cotton fabric encasing a polyester wadding. This is loosely quilted and has a central zip for opening. A head area is provided in the shape of a hood.
The known types of quilted bag or pouch are made as a complete unit and consequently once soiled, as will happen many times in use, because of their bulk, they are difficult and costly to clean.
In view of the habit to leave babies unsupervised in quilted bags or pouches and often face downwards there is always a risk of suffocation in the known types of bag or pouch.
There is also the hazard of a baby choking on loose fabric and wadding under the present quilting arrangement.
Lastly there is no provision for flame resistant wadding in the known type of quilted bag or pouch.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to overcome partially or wholly at least one of the above disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a quilted bag or pouch for babies wherein the wadding is in the form of a mattress which is removable.
Preferably, the mattress is symmetrical so that it can be replaced either way round or turned upside down, when replaced in the quilted bag or pouch.
A plurality of holes or apertures may be provided in the mattress. These may be arranged across the entire mattress or confined to two zones at either end of the mattress.
An opening may be provided at the foot end of the quilted bag or pouch to enable the mattress to be removed, said opening being covered by a flap.
The mattress is also preferably made of a flame retarding polyurethane foam for safety purposes.
The present invention will now be described in greater detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein: Figure I is a plan view of one preferred form of quilted bag or pouch for babies; Figure 2 is a plan view of one preferred form of removable mattress for the bag or pouch shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a part plan view of an alternative form of removable mattress.
Referring first to Figure 1, the quilted bag or pouch for babies comprises a polyurethane mattress 10 (not shown in this figure) which is covered with a cotton or polyester and cotton lining 12; and a quilted cover 14 which is secured to the mattress and which forms the blankets for the bag or pouch.
The quilted cover 14 is provided with a zip fastener 16, which assists in lifting the baby from the bag or placing the baby into the bag and also for changing nappies.
An opening (not shown) at the foot end 18 of the quilted bag or pouch, covered by a flap, is provided to enable the mattress to be removed from the quilted bag or pouch when it needs washing or replacing due to damage or wear.
The quilted cover 14 is sewn or otherwise secured to the lining 12, and a decorative frill 20 edges the cover 14 and lining 12 at the head and foot portions.
Referring now to Figure 2, the mattress 10, which is removable from the quilted bag or pouch through the opening at the foot end thereof is symmetrical, so that it can be replaced either way around or turned upside down, when replaced in the quilted bag or pouch. The mattress 10 is made of polyurethane foam which has been specially treated so as to have flame retarding properties.
As will be seen from Figure 2, both the foot and head ends 25 and 26 are slightly rounded. At the two end zones of the mattress, there are provided a plurality of apertures 22, the apertures extending right through the mattress. As shown these apertures or holes 22 are arranged in rows, the apertures of each row being off-set between adjacent rows by a distance which is equal to one half the distance between adjacent apertures in a row.
In an alternative form not shown, the apertures 22 can be provided throughout the entire length and breadth of the mattress.
The apertures 22 are designed to let air be inhaled through the mattress by the baby in the event that the baby is lying face down.
These apertures 22 may be diamond shaped as shown in Figure 2, but could equally well be any other convenient shape, e.g. square or rectangular and may also be arranged in any other pattern from that shown in Figure 2. In the alternative form shown in the part plan view of Figure 3, the apertures 23 in the mattress are circular.
By providing the apertures in the mattress, the mattress can be put back in the cot the other way around or upside-down. This has the effect of prolonging the useful life of the mattress, and always ensuring holes are at the head end.
Figure 3 also shows another modification where the foot end of the mattress 10 has a straight edge 24, whereas the head end is slightly rounded as shown at 26 in Figure 2. In this modification, the mattress can only be turned upside-down.
To summarize, the provision of a removable mattress has the advantage that it can be easily removed for cleaning, and the provision of the apertures has the advantage that there is substantially no danger of the baby suffocating when in the face down position, since this greatly improves the air permeability thereby allowing air to be freely drawn through the apertures in the head end of the mattress. The provision of apertures in the mattress has the advantage that it does not matter which way around the mattress is inserted through the opening at the foot end 18 of the quilted bag or pouch.
The provision of a polyurethane foam having flame retarding properties ensures a higher degree of safety in the event that the quilted bag or pouch becomes exposed to flames.
Lastly, the fitted nature of the fabric covering the mattress and the rigidity of the foam obviates any possibility of the baby choking or being able to inhale loose cloth or wadding.
