Abstract

A sleeping or carriage arrangement for babies or small children comprises a sleeping bag (1) with a substantially laminar head rest (3), the head rest comprising foamed plastics material and having a multiplicity of perforations extending from the top surface to the bottom surface thereof and a fabric covering for the head rest, said covering being integral with the sleeping bag (1). The perforations permit a user to breathe easily even when lying face downwards or with its head inside the sleeping bag. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved baby nest This invention relates to a sleeping or carriage arrangement for babies and small children to keep them warm and particularly to sleeping bags which incorporate an integral head rest.
These are known as baby nests. A previously known arrangement incorporates a quilted head rest with an elasticated periphery which is gathered by means of elastication or draw strings which may partially surround a users head. Such arrangements have aroused concern because a user, particularly a small baby, may become trapped with its face covered by the gathered portion and may thereby risk suffocation or restricted air flow.
According to the present invention a child's or baby's sleeping arrangement comprises a sleeping bag with a mattress and a substantially laminar head rest, the head rest comprising foamed plastics material and having a multiplicity of perforations extending from the top surfaces to the bottom surfaces thereof and a fabric covering for the pillow, said covering being integral with said sleeping bag.
Preferably the mattress also comprises foamed plastic material having a multiplicity of perforations extending from the top surface to the bottom surface thereof.
The provision of perforations in the pillow and mattress enables a child or baby to breathe more easily when lying face downwards even if disposed with its head inside the sleeping bag. The perforations may have any convenient shape.
The pillow may be formed, either integral with the mattress or separate from it.
The covering preferably takes the form of a pouch inside which the pillow is disposed.
The pillow may either be removable from the pouch or may be secured within it.
The pillow and covering may be of any convenient shape, for example square or rounded, but is not provided with an elasticated periphery and does not surround or enciose a users head.
The sleeping bag is preferably provided with one or more sliding clasp fasteners extending the length of the bag to permit easy access to its interior.
The invention may be better understood from the following description by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 which illustrates a baby nest in accordance with the invention.
The illustrated arrangement comprises a sleeping bag 1 made of insulating material and provided with a sliding clasp fastener 2 extending the length of the bag. In an alternative arrangement the sliding clasp fastener does not extend the full length of the bag. A laminar or flat pouch 3 which extends horizontally from the end of the bag, is provided with an opening on its underside (not shown) and accommodates a removable safety pillow.
The pillow which is not shown, is composed of foamed plastics material and bears approximately twenty triangular perforations which extend from the top surface of the pillow to the bottom surface. The perforations have the form of equilateral triangles although any other shape or number thereof may be employed. For example circular, square or tapering perforations may be alternatively used.
The mattress may also be composed of the same perforated material.
It is not essential that the pouch and pillow are rectangular as shown in the Figure, rounded, semicircular or eliptical shapes being within the scope of the invention.
The sliding clasp fastener may be provided at the side of the sleeping bag or, alternatively, two or more sliding clasp fasteners may be provided at any convenient location on the bag. Hook and eye fasteners, buttons or other fastening means may be provided as an alternative to the sliding clasp fasteners.
The pillow may in an alternative embodiment be sewn or otherwise secured into the pouch which may or may not open in any convenient manner, either at an end or at its lower surface.
1. A child's or babies sleeping arrangement comprising a sleeping bag with a substantially laminar head rest, the head rest comprising foamed plastics material and having a multiplicity of perforations extending from the top surface to the bottom surface thereof and a fabric covering for the head rest, said covering being integral with the sleeping bag.
2. An arrangement as claimed in claim 1, including a mattress comprising foamed plastics material having a multiplicity of perforations extending from the top surface to the bottom surface thereof.
3. An arrangement as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the mattress is integral with the head rest.
4. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the covering for the head rest comprises a pouch.
5. An arrangement as claimed in claim 4, wherein the head rest is removable from the pouch.
6. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the head rest and covering are either square or rounded.
7. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim provided with one or more sliding clasp fasteners extending the length of the bag.
8. An arrangement as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 provided with hook and eye
