Abstract

An infant 20 is supported on a surface 21 of a cot 17 with the head 20a of the infant being in the region of a lining member 10. Fresh air may pass through holes 14 of foam portions comprising the lining member 10 with the air circulating around the infant 20. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO COTS The present invention relates to a lining member for use with an infant's cots or pen.
Most cots or pens for infants comprise a supporting surface on which the infant lies, and four sides or walls which extend vertically upwards of the supporting surface to prevent the infant from falling off the supporting surface or climbing out of the cot.
The sides of the cot typically comprise a number of wooden bars or poles which provide a secure enclosure for the infant and at the same time allow air to freely circulate through the walls and around the infant, which is important particularly during sleep.
Naturally the bars, being rigid, are prone to cause injury to the infant when the infant bumps into them, for example when the infant is playing in the cot, or if the infant rolls over during sleep.
Padded lining members are sometimes placed around the inside of the cot, against the walls, in order to reduce the risk of injury in this way. Such padded lining members typically comprise a shock absorbing layer of foam enclosed in a sleeve of cotton or polyester, and are tied to the wooden bars along, usually, three sides of the cot, namely the "head" side and two adjacent sides.
Unfortunately the use of such padded lining members greatly reduces the circulation of air through the walls of the cot and this disadvantageously reduces the extent to which fresh air is able to circulate around the infant.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a lining member for lining at least a part of a wall of an infant's cot or pen, the lining member comprising at least one portion arranged to permit the flow of air there- through.
Preferably the lining member comprises at least one shock absorbent portion.
The lining member may comprise a number of openings.
The lining member may comprise at least one foraminous portion. Preferably the lining member comprises at least one perforated portion.
In a preferred arrangement the lining member comprises at least one shock absorbent portion having a number of holes therein, so as to permit the flow of air there- through.
The shock absorbent portion may be encased in a sleeve member, which sleeve member is arranged to permit the flow of air therethrough.
The lining member may comprise a plurality of shock absorbent portions, each having a number of holes therein.
In a preferred arrangement the lining member comprises a plurality of shock absorbent portions encased in a common sleeve, each of the shock absorbent portions being arranged to be located against a wall of the cot or pen in use.
The lining member may comprise three shock absorbent portions.
The lining member may comprise three shock absorbent portions.
The shock absorbent portions may comprise portions of foam. The foam may comprise polyester foam.
The lining member is preferably provided with at least one strap for attachment of the lining member to a wall of the cot or pen.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided an enclosure for an infant, the enclosure comprising a supporting surface and at least one wall extending upwardly from said supporting surface, the enclosure further comprising a lining member arranged, in use, to line at least partially the or each wall, the lining member comprising at least one portion arranged to permit the flow of air therethrough.
The enclosure may comprise a cot or pen for an infant.
The lining member may be according to any statement herein.
The invention also includes a lining member or an enclosure substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
The present invention includes any combination of the herein described features or limitations.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which; Figure 1 shows an embodiment of a lining member, in substantially flat configuration, Figure 2 shows the lining member of Figure 1 in upright, folded configuration, and Figure 3 is a plan view of an infant's cot including a lining member as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring particularly to Figures 1 and 2 a lining member shown generally at 10 comprises a head portion 11 and two side portions 12 and 13 (the three portions being shown in broken lines). The portions 11, 12 and 13 comprise pieces of soft polyester foam each having a plurality of holes 14 (shown in broken lines) pressed out therefrom.
The three portions 11, 12 and 13 are retained inside a cotton sleeve 15 which completely covers them and which holds them in the configuration shown in Figure 1. The sleeve 15 is provided with nylon straps 16 along its perimeter to allow the lining member 10 to be attached to the bars of an infant's cot (shown in Figure 3).
Figure 2 shows the lining member 10 in a folded configuration ready for insertion into an infant's cot (the holes being omitted from the diagram for clarity).
Referring to Figure 3, this shows, in plan view, a part of an infant's cot shown generally at 17, comprising wooden upper rails 18 and (in broken lines) beneath the rails 18, wooden bars 19. On the inside of the cot 17 is the lining member 10 which is held against the bars 19 by the straps 16 (shown in Figure 2) which straps are tied around the bars 19. The lining member need not extend all of the way to the top of the rails In use, an infant 20 is supported on a supporting surface 21 of the cot 17 with the head 20a of the infant in the region of the lining member 10. If the infant makes contact with the sides of the cot, the soft foam portions (11, 12 or 13) of the lining member 10 absorb any shock and cushion the impact of the infant 20. The infant 20 is therefore protected from injury caused by banging against the wooden bars 19.
Furthermore, fresh air is freely able to pass through the holes 14 of the foam portions, and through the fully permeable cotton sleeve 15 of the lining member 10 and circulate around the infant 20, thereby ensuring that the infant 20 is able to breathe comfortably.
Although the head portion 11 of the lining member 10 is shown as having a curved upper edge, this upper edge, together with one or more of the side portions, may be of a different shape whilst still providing the benefit of the invention.
Similarly other modifications may be made to the lining member without departing from the scope of the invention. For example the edge of the cotton sleeve 15 may have a frill to give the lining member 10 a more attractive appearance.
