UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALICE M. BARTLETT, OF LOWVELL, MASSACI-IUSE'FS.
ATTACHMENT FOR CRIBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,112, dated September 19, 1899. Application filed February 16, 1899- Serial No. 705,659. (No model- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALICE M. BARTLETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Cribs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for cribs and comprises means for retaining the bedclothes in place and of inclosing a space at the head of the crib or bed in which a child may stand without danger of falling lengthwise of the bed.
It is well known that children in their sleep frequently become restless and throw off or kick off the bed-coverings, and thereby expose themselves to the liability of catching cold and that constant watchfulness on the part of mothers and nurses is necessary to keep the clothes in place or to replace them when displaced. It is also known that small children have a habit of standing up in bed asv soon as they are able to stand and that they frequently falllengthwise of the bed, or nearly so, the high sides of the crib being so near together as to make the danger of falling across the bed very small. In falling nearly but not quite lengthwise of the bed the child is liable to suffer serious injury by striking the head or face against the sides of the crib.
. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric perspective view of the head portion of a crib or childs bed to which my improvement is attached; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal central section of the same.
The crib or bedstead A is of any usual construction, having high sides and head or guards, and is represented as having legs a, lower side rails at, upper side rails a alower end rail (t and upper end rail or, the upper and lower rails being connected by vertical studs a the only part of the bedstead which is material to the use of the invention herein described being said guards, which prevent the occupant from falling out of bed.
The usual bedding B is supported in the usual manner in the crib.
A curtain or partition D of sheet material, preferably of textile material, is stretched across the crib above the bedding B and is se-.
cured to the upper rails a and lower rails a by any convenient means, asby tapes d, sewed to the corners of said curtain and looped around said upper and lower rails, as shown. The lower edge of the curtain D is arranged just above the bedspread C'or top covering of the bed, and said spread is ruffled or fluted at 0 below said curtain, the tops of the ruflies or flutes 0 being loosely connected to the lower edge of said curtain by cross-stitching d in order to allow a slight motion of said spread when said curtain is in place and to avoid hampering too much the movements of the occupant of the bed. For the same reason that is, to permit a limited movement of the bed-covering and not to interfere with the motions of the child-I provide the curtain with an elastic gore d, inserted in the middle of the lower edge portion of said curtain. The elasticity of the curtain and the gore prevent any undue restraint of the child and allow the child, within necessary limits, perfect freedom of movement, and the arrangement of the lower edge of the curtain above the general level of the bed-covering prevents any pressure which would interfere with respiration or produce any discomfort or to prevent the child from getting under orout from under the bed-covering. At the same time the loose and flexible attachment of the curtain to the bed-covering is sufficient to prevent an'estless child from kicking or throwing off the bedclothes. The curtain is sufiiciently strong in its upper portion to hold up the child when standing and to prevent said child from falling toward the foot of the bed, and the space inclosed between the curtain, the sides, and head of the bed is large enough to allow sufficient freedom of movement to the child when standing, but not large enough to allow the child to fall.
I claim as my invention- 1. An attachment forcribs, consisting of a curtain, provided with attaching means, to engage the sides of said crib and with an elastic gore in its lower edge portion.
2. The combination of the curtain, provided with attaching means adapted to engage the sides of a crib, and to hold said ourtain in a vertical position across said crib, and a bed-covering provided with a ruffle, arranged below said curtain and loosely attached to the lower edge of said curtain.
3. The combination of the curtain, provided with an elastic portion in its lower edge I In testimony whereof I have aflixed my sigand with attaching means, adapted to engage natn re in presence of two witnesses.
the sides of a crib, and to hold said curtain ,1
in a vertical position across said crib, and a I ALICE BARTLElT' bed-cm ering provided with a rulfle, arranged \Vitnesses:
below said curtain and loosely attached to the ALBERT M. MOORE,
lower edge of said curtain. GRACE E. IIIBBERT.
