BED ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '16, 1920.
Application filed. January 13, 1917. Serial No. 142,189. i
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MXRY E. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an attachment for beds including a slidable frame supported by the bed structure and adapted to be extended beyond the foot of the bed to support the bedclothes, when the latter are thrown back off of the bed, above the floor.
Another object is the provision of a simple and efficient type of clip. which may be readily applied to the longitudinal rails of the bed to support the frame of the attachment.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described,
claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a bed, illustrating the attachment applied thereto,
Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view. partly broken away, on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, A
Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of one of the supporting clips detached,
Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary side elevation of one of the longitudinal rails of the bed structure, illustrating a modified type of supporting clip, and
Fig. 6 represents a transverse sectional view through the bed rail, showing the modified type of supporting clip in edge elevation.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals 5 and 6 indicate the head and foot, respectively, of a bed, which are connected by the usual longitudinal or side rails 7 upon which is supported the spring, mattress and bed clothing (not shown).
The attachment comprises a set of four tension 11, having the lower end turned to present a supporting loop 12. From the loop 12 the material of the, extension 10 is directed laterally, with relation to the extension, to provide the finger grip 13, which may be conveniently engaged and depressed by the finger of the operator to expand the loop 12 and facilitate applicatlon or removal of the frame, designated generally by the numeral l i, whi'ch'latter is supported in position under the bed structure in the several clips 8. The extension 11 of each supporting clip is slitted to provide retaining members 15, which are extended oppositely to the finger grip 13 and engage the under side of the horizontally disposed portion of the side rail 7.
The frame 1 1-, which is preferably constructed of tubular metal, is slidably supported in the loops 12 of the several supporting clips, and is adapted, when moved outwardly with relation to the bed structure, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, to pro- ]ect a distance beyond the foot 6 of the bed. The outward movement of the frame 14 with relation to the bed structure is limited by the inner end member 16 of the frame and the portion of said frame which projects beyond the foot of the bed, when the frame is extended, is provided with a plurality of supporting rods 17, which are connected at one end with the outer end member18 of the frame and at their opposite ends to the transverse connecting member 19 of the frame.
When it is desired to remove the bed clothes for airing, or any other purpose, the frame 14: is moved outwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the bed clothing is thrown over the foot 6 and is supported upon the exposed portion of the frame 14 and the supporting rods 17. The modification of the clip illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 is particularly designed for application to bed structures having cylindrical or tubular side rails 7, and the clip includes an annular body member 20, the free end 21 of which may be conveniently flexed to facilitate apextreme end of the. loop is erally of the depending extension 22, as 111- directed latdicated at 24h to provide a iinyer grip. 7
It will be noter from the :roregoing deseriptlon that the device 1s flat. andsuper- *ficially unobstructed that wheugiot in use tachment having a rectangular it may be arranged wholly within the contour of the bedstead frame or within the base of said frame. and when extended is jparts of the side rails supported solely by the clips or hangers which are removably engaged with the side rails of the said bedstead frame, the atmarginal frame of which the side bars or rods are adapted for sliding movement in the guides formed by said clips or hangers and being adapted for disengagement therefrom by an upward movement of the attachment frame or amovement in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said L frame. These peculiarities provide for the. sale the attachment as an articleof manufacture, independently of the bedstead V and applicable thereto by the consumer without the use of tools or the exercise of any me chanical skill. The hangers or clips may be snapped upon the side rails of the bedstead and the side bars or rods of the man ginal frame of the attachment snapped into the loops provided for their reception and serving as guides for the movement of said frame, and when it is desired to take down the bedstead said extra frame or attachment may readily be removed and stored compactly with the other elements of said portions which engage around the outer and previr ed with yielding, normally closed loops, which are disposed within the outer edges of the side rails of the bed frame, the guide members be'ng; provided with means engageable with the side rails of the bed frame for preventing the bed guide members from turnin upon the side rails and a rectangular frame having its side members loosely retained in the loops and retained within the loops when the loops are at their completely closed condition with relation to the guide members. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
