Description
E. B. PLUMB. BEDCL'OTHES HOLDING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED OCT- 6; I919.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
EJNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BEDCLOTHES-HOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Application filed October 6, 1919. Serial No. 328,8 04.
T 0 all whom it may concefmf Be it known that I EDWIN B. PLUMB, a citizen of the United states of America, residing at Clawson, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedclothes-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a bed clothes holding device and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive device that may be easily and quickly installed on a bed, crib, or. other structure for retaining clothes thereon, so that the same cannot become accidentally displaced during the slumber of a restless child, or one that tosses or repeatedly moves in the bed or crib, it being a well known fact that restless children become uncovered during the night and are more or less exposed, thus requiring the attention of others. lVith my device the edges of the clothes are yieldably held so that a child may turn or' move and sleep in comfort without undue pressure of the clothes on the body, and at the same time be assured of bodily cover. The device is designed so as not to injure the bed clothes and when not in use to occupy a comparatively small space.
The details of construction entering into my invention will be hereinafter considered and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a plan of a bed provided with a clothes holding device in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the clamp forming part of the device, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of a portion of the device.
The clothes holding device comprises two parallel flexible members 1 that may be made of rope, wire, or any material suitable for the purpose, and the ends of said members are tied or otherwise attached, as at 2, to coiled retractile springs 3 having end convolutions thereof terminating in hooks 4 provided with covers 5 that may be made of rubber tubing. The hooks 4: are adapted to be placed in engagement with the head and foot pieces 6 of a bed along the longitudinal edges thereof and the members 1 are maintained taut by the springs 3. At certain ends of the members 1 there may be take-up devices 2* which will permit of the tension Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
of the springs 3 being increased or decreased The groove 9 is adja- 4' One of the clampsections 7 is provided with a screw bolt 12 extending through an opening 13 in the other clamp section and provided with a winged'thumb-nut 14 so that the clamp section 7 may be locked together on the member 1 and the clothes 11. The clothes 11 may be gripped at points inset fromthe sides of the end thus not inter fere with the tucking in of the bed clothes, and while it is preferable to use two devices one at each side of the bed, as shown, I may use three, or even more. One or two of the devices may be released relative to the bed clothes so that a child may be placed in bed and then with all of the devices in operative relation the bed clothes will be yieldably held without any danger of accidental displacement due to any movement of the occupant of the bed,
The clamps may be made of wood or suitable material finished to harmonize with the bed and when the bed is to be made up the entire device may be removed if necessary.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A bed clothes holding device comprising flexible members disposed in parallelism and adapted to have the ends thereof connected to the ends of a bed so as to extend lengthwise thereof at the side edges of the bedclothes, and detachable clamps at intervals on said flexible members and adapted to frictionally grip the side edges of the bed clothes.
2. A bed clothes holding device comprising parallel flexible members, coiled retractile springs at the ends thereof terminating in hooks adapted for engagement with the ends of a bed and-support said flexible members lengthwise thereof at the side edges of ing members adapted to have the ends there- 7 of connected to the ends of a bed and extend 10 lengthwise thereof, said members being movable relative to the clothes of the bed and to and from each end of the bed, and means adapted to connect said members to the bed clothes of the bed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 15 in the presence of two witnesses.
