LUETTEKE M4947 CHILDS RESTRAINING ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS Filed July 21, 1954 Patented Sept. 17, 1935 UNiTED STTEE Zitii @ATENE QFFQ'E CHILDS RESTRAINING ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS This invention relates to improvements in childs restraining attachment for beds, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character by means of the use of which an infant or child may be securely fastened in a bed without the use of body harness or other body engaging devices, so that he cannot work his way out from under the bed covering, while at the same time the freedom of movement and of turning to change positions will not be interfered with.

A further object is to provide an improved device of this character which when in use will extend beneath the mattress and will be detachably secured or attached by one end to the bed spring, and detachably secured by the other end to the garment of the child, preferably to a portion of the garment which does not contact with the body of the child, and which device will not only be concealed by the bed covers, but will not in any manner interfere with the tucking of the sheets or covering over the edge of the mattress and between the mattress and springs.

To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.

Figure 2 is a View partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section, of a bed and bed covering, having a device of this character applied thereto, and showing the same in use.

Figure 3 is a top plan View of Figure 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral i@ designates the body portion of the device which is constructed of any suitable flexible material, such as fabric or the like and may be of any desired length. The body portion is comparatively narrow with respect to its length and secured to one end of the body in any suitable manner, such as by means of a securing device l l, is a fastening member I2 of any desired or suitable construction, here shown in the form of a snap hook, which has swiveled thereto an eye member i3. The end of the body Iii passes through the eye I3 and is fastened by the securing means so that the fastening means I2 will be adapted for a swivel motion with respect tothe body it.

A connecting member I4 has swiveled thereto an eye i5 and through this eye the other end of the body it passes as at i6, and the extremity of the body is secured by means of a suitable securing device or element Il, so that the elements I2 5 and lll will be secured to the ends of the body it, and each of the elements I4 will have a swivel motion with respect to the body to permit independent rotation of the elements with respect to the body. 10

The numeral i8 designates generally any suitable form of clamp, here shown as comprising a body I9 provided with an eye 2li. A member 2l is pivotally mounted upon the body and has pivotally mounted to the free extremity thereof 15 a flexible tongue member which is adapted to be projected into the eye 2i) so as to connect the clamp to the article which is to be held.

The clamp i8 is secured or connected to a strap 23 passing through an eye or loop I8a on the 20 clamp, and the ends of the strap are connected together by means of a buckle or other fastening device 23a whereby the length of the loop and consequently of the strap may be varied. The other end of the loop of the strap passes .through 25 an eye or ring 24, to which latter the connecting member or hook I4 is adapted to be detachably secured. A slide 24a may also be provided and through which the folds of the strap 23 pass and by means of which the strap members may be 30 held together and against spreading.

Obviously, by increasing or decreasing the length of the element or strap 23, the length of the entire device may be varied.

In use, the fastening device I2 constitutes an 35 anchor and is adapted to engage or be secured to any portion of the spring 25 of the bed or cot 25. This anchor device is secured to the springs at any desired distance from the end 2l of the spring and is disposed under the mat- 40 tress 28.

One end of the sheet or covering 29 which is placed upon the mattress is tucked under the mattress as usual, as indicated at 3Q, so that the anchor i2 will be disposed between the mattress 45 23, the tucked in end 3% of the sheet and the spring 25. The body portion if! of the device is then passed over the end 3l of the mattress and over the sheet 29 so that the clamp I8 may be secured to the lower end or extremity of the 50 garment 32 of the child, as shown more clearly in Figures 2 and 3. This device is preferably arranged centrally of the end of the mattress and the length of the body is so adjusted that it will hold the child from crawling out from under 55 the covering or blanket 33 at the top thereof. When the blanket 33 is placed in position on the bed, it will cover the portion of the restraining means which is above the mattress and inasmuch as the anchoring device I2 is secured to the springs 25 at a substantial distance from the extremity of the mattress, as shown in Figure 2, the end 34 of the blanket may be tucked between the mattress 28 and the spring 25, without any interference with the anchoring device I2.

With this improved construction it will be manifest that the child Will not only be restrained from crawling out from under the top of the blanket, but the device is so constructed and arranged that the child may turn or change his position freely by reason of the swivel formations in the device.

While the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combina.- ton and arrangement of the several parts, Within the scope of the claim, Without departing from the spirit of this invention.

What is claimed as new is:-

A childs restraining device of the character described comprising a flexible strap of substantial length, a hook secured to the strap and adapted to be hooked into the bed spring beneath the mattress, a garment engaging clasp, a strap secured by one end to the clasp, means whereby the length of one of said straps may be varied, means connecting the other ends of the straps together, the said connecting means comprising separable elements one of which is secured to each of the straps.
