RESTRAINING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ARTHUR G. POPHAM,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and 5 State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Restraining Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such-as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked theron, which form a part of this specification. v

This invention relates to a restraining de- 'vice particularly designed for infants to prevent the infant from becoming uncovered as well as to eliminate. chance of the infant falling or crawling out of bed. Due to the inherent tendency for small children and infants to throw aside the coverings or to crawl out of the coverings while retiring, it' is practically impossible to keep the child covered, unless some means is provided for limiting its movement longitudinally of the bed. It is well known that children contract various diseases, due to exposure during the night so I have provided a restraining device in the form of a garment with tapes to be fastened to the head board-andfoot board of the bed or some otherv convenient-part of the bed, the restraining device being so constructed and applied that the child will have free movement in turning over in either direction, but will be prevented from moving longi- -tudinal1y of the bed, consequently the child will be held in such position with respect to the covers that it'cannot become exposed. The invention consists in certain novel parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be referred to hereinafter, referenee being had to the accompanying drawings, in whicl 1 device applied, and

4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. To the neck portion of the jacket are secured two tapes 10 and 11, the upper ends of which meet, the upper ends being secured to a tape or strap 12 which may be tied to one of the rails of the bed 13. The skirt of the jacket also has a tape 14 fastened to it, the end of which may likewise be attached to one of the rails at the foot of the bed 13. The jacket will fit snugly around the body of the infant, permitting it to assume a natural position in sleeping.

12 and 14. may be slacked off if desired so that the infant may roll or turn to a limited extent but any attempt to assume a sitting position or roll out of or crawl from the bed will be resisted by the

It will be observed that the jacket entirely encloses the torso of the baby and that the tapes 12 and 14: are in longitudinal alignment so that the infant may readily turn from one side to the other, the only point of restraint being at the extreme ends of the tapes 12 and 14:.

What L claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

1. A device of the class described comprising a jacket having arm holes and fastening tapes for closing the open front end of the jacket, a tape secured longitu- 2. A device of the class described comprising a jacket to fit around the back and over the torso of an infant, tapes for closing the front end of the jacket, the jacket having arm holes, tapes arranged in V-shape and secured to the neck of the jacket, a tape fastened to the first named tapes and having an end for engagement with the head rail' of the bed and a tape secured to the skirt of the jacket in line with the sec ond mentioned tape and having an end for engagement with the foot rail of the bed.
