Description

April 1931- F. c. J. SCHMIDT 1,802,540
CHILD S BEDCOVER Filed Sept. 12, 1928 lei/g A T TORNE Y.
Patented Apr. 28,1931
UNITED s 'rA'rEs FREDRICK C, J. SCHMIDT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI cnnm's nnncovnn' Application filed September 12, 1928. Serial No. 305,871.
This invention relates to childs bed cover and especially to that type which serves as a cover and at the same time is adapted to be so secured to the child that regardless of the childs position in the bed, some portion of the cover will extend over it.
The main object of this invention 'is to provide a baby cover consisting of a unitary structure comprising a blankethaving corre-.
1. lated neck and arm openings adjacent the center portion thereof.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a childs bedcover comprising a blanket having a neck opening, a placket extending therefrom and-a body band having its outer ends attached to said blanket intermediate the ends of said placket and adapted to encircle the occupants body.
Further objects of this invention are. simplicity of construction, eas of operation, and
extreme efliciency. I
Various other objectsand advantages will be apparent from the following description of the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, isa perspective view of .a portion of a childs bed 5 o'w' a cover in operative relation ther on, ming this invention; I
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of a portion of a baby s bed with a cover shown in section;
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the under side of the cover; D
Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the top side of the cover; and
Fig. 5, is an enlarged view of.the' central portion of the cover.
Like reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views and numeral 10 designates a portion of a babys bedstead of any ordinary type. 11 represents the usual pad or mattress. 12 is a blanket of substantially rectangular form having its opposite lower corners notched so that itcan be properly fitted. on the bed. Tabs 13 are rovided adjacent the lower end of said blanet by means of which pins or anys'uitable fastenings may be used to secure the blanket to the pad or mattress; While I have desi ated 12 as a blanket, yet it is a parent t at a quilt, sheet, or any suitable b y mempull of the cover against the neck or arms, a
ber might be used with equal results. Adj acent the center portion of the blanket 12 is a neckbpening 14 having a slit or placket 15 extending therefrom a sufficient distance to facilitate the positioning of the neck opening over the childs head. To secure the placket in the closed position thus closing the neck opening about the childs neck, I have provided securing means preferably buttons 16 and button holes 17. In order to change the size of the neck opening to acc'ommodate different sized children, I have provided two spaced apart sets of buttons. I Correlated with neck openings 14 are arm openings 18 formed in the blanket 12 and having sleeves 19 secured therearound and extending above said blanket.
For more securely attaching this cover to the occupant and to prevent any annoying body band 20, as clearly shown in Fi 5,'is secured at its outer ends to the blan et by means of stitching or any other suitable means as shown at 21. The ends of the band extend to opposite sides of the placket respectively and intermediate the ends thereof so that when the placket is opened the band may be extended to permit the insertion of the childs head and arms after which the neck opening isclosed by means of the fastenings 16 and 17, and thereby the band 20 is secured around the'occupants bod just be-v neath its arms as clearly shown in ig. 2. 2 Since it is customary for the child to sleep with its head adjacent one end of the bed, and as stated above, the neck opening is positioned near the center of the cover, it is necessary to place the upper end of the cover in accordion folds 22 at the head of the bed leaving sufiicient material to be tucked in for securing the cover in position. When the child is in a reclining position as shown in Fig. 2, the accordion pleats remain undisturbed, but when the child is raised to the position shown in Fig. 1, or perhaps with his head at the foot of the bed, the accordion pleats will unfold I so that the covers will not retard the movement of the child, but will always serve as a COVGI. 1. 10
While I have illustrated and described what is now deemed; to constitute the preblanket and being adapted to encircle the ocferred form of embodiment of the invention, I desire to reserve the right to make all such formal changes as may fairly fall within the 5 scope of the appended claims. t What I claim is: p
1. As a new-article of manufacture a protective bed cover consisting of a unitary structure comprising a blanket having correlated neck and arm openings adjacent the center portion thereof, a placket extending from said neck opening having releasable means for securing it in the closed position, a band on the lower side of said. blanket havin its opposite ends attached thereto interme iate the ends of said placket and on opposite sides thereof, respective1y,said band bein adapted to encircle the occupants body just elow the arms;
bed cover consisting of a unitary structure comprising a substantially rectangular blan- 2. As a new article of manufacture a childs v cupants body below the arms.
6. As a new article of manufacture a protective bed cover consisting of a unitary structure comprising a blanket having correlated neck and arm openings adjacent the center portion thereof, a placket extending from said neck'opening having releasable means for securing. it in the closed position and a band adapted to encircle the occupants body attached at its opposite ends to said blanket adjacent the center portion of said placket and having a series'of buttons whereby \the ends of said bands are adj-ustably connected. In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature. I
FREDRICK C. J. SCHMIDT.
