Description

Marh 24, 1936. E. F. MURPHY DEVICE FOR SECURING CHILDREN UNDER THE COVERS Filed Nov. 12, 1954 gmmtw [l/en 15 Murphy I dttowu Patented Mar. 24, 1936 PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR SECURING CHILDREN UNDER THE COVERS Ellen F. Murphy, Spokane, Wash.
Application November 12, 1934, Serial No. 752,673
1 Claim. (01. 128-134) My invention relates to devices for securing children under the covers and certain objects of the invention are to provide a securing device of this nature comprising a jacket to be slipped over 5 a child's head and shoulders and secured around the waist, and having head straps adapted to be secured around the corners of the bed and fastened to the'covers, and foot extension straps adapted to be secured to the sides or springs of 10 the bed whereby the child is retained under the covers. Further objects are to provide means for one of the extension straps whereby the child has free body movement and may turn over in bed. Still further objects are to provide tab means 15 connected to the chest portion of the jacket for securing the covers and thus preventing same from being thrown off or from covering the child's face.
With the above and other objects in view which 20 will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing; wherein: Figure 1 is a. view in perspective showing the general application and arrangement of the device; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the jacket portion and associated parts; Fig. 3 is a detail view in section showing the tab securing means and taken on a broken line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective showing a hook or clip end portion of the foot extension securing strap.
35 Referring to the drawing, throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, the numeral 5 designates the jacket portion of the device which may be of any convenient form that is adapted to fit around the body and shoulders 40 of a child. Secured to opposite shoulder portions of said jacket are a pair of extension straps 6 which are secured around the two head corner posts or around the sides of the bed, and whose remote ends are secured by any suitable means,
45 such as by pinning, to the upper edges of the covers as at I. The waistportion of the jacket 5 is provided with a belt extension 8 which may be adjustably secured around a childs waist by means of safety pins or other suitable fastening means.
The lower front edge portion of the jacket 5 is provided with a loop 9 through which a foot end securing strap I is slidably installed. Said foot end strap is made in one piece and each of its ends is provided with a hook or clip ii as most clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. Said hooks may be caught on the edges of the bed spring or other convenient place at the foot of the 10 bed. While the extension straps 6 retain the child's head and shoulders approximately in the center of the bed, the foot straps l0 permit free movement of the child's body by the loop 9 sliding back and forth on said strap as will be understood. If desired, sufflcient slack or looseness may be left in the straps 6 and I0 so as to permit the child to turn over in bed.
Another important feature of my invention resides in a securing tab I2 that is stitched or otherwise fastened to the front collar or chest portion of the jacket 6. The covers may be secured to said tab by means of a safety pin or the? like and thus prevented from covering the face of the child or from being thrown off of the child during his movements during the night.
It will now be apparent that I have provided a simple and effective means for securing a child under the covers, which is adjustable throughout, and which may be produced at comparatively 0 small cost. Having thus described my invention, it being understood that minor changes may be resorted to without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A device for securing a child under covers of a bed comprising a jacket, securing straps extending from the upper and lower portions of the jacket, and a tab having an end portion 40 folded over the upper edge of the jacket at the front thereof and sewed thereto, said tab extending downwardly from the upper edge of the jacket midway the width thereof whereby a pin may be passed through the tab and the upper edge portion of a cover to hold the cover up close about a child.
