BABY BATHTUB WITH CLOTH SUPPORT Filed 001:. 24, 1947 Patented Apr. 3, 1951 UNITED STATES BABY BATHTUB WITH CLOTH SUPPORT Robert L. Burr and Jennie M. Hudson, Birmingham, Ala.
Application October 24, 1947, Serial No. 781,808
1 Claim. (01. 4185) This invention relates to a baby bath tub having a cloth support for use in combination with the tub. The main object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for bathing a baby. Further objects are to provide such means that will be cheap to manufacture, easy to use, free from complicated parts, easy to keep in a sanitary condition, and very durable. Other objects and advantages will appear from the drawing and description.
By referring to the drawing part of this application, it will be observed that Fig. 1 is a plan view of the bath tub and supporting cloth with part of the cloth cut away; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the supporting cloth with retaining cord through its hem.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the device comprises a shallow bath tub I having an integral large round flange 2 extending all the way around its top edge. The bottom of the tub extends upward at one end to form a ledge 3 with an indenture 4 therein. The cloth support 5 is provided with a wide hem 6 through which a tape or cord 1 is inserted. The cloth is sufliciently wide to allow its hem to lap over and under the round flange so that the cord can be drawn tight around the top of the tub and under the flange to thus retain the cloth in position for use while bathing the baby. The cloth may be made of a size to fit taut or of a size to fit slack for support of the baby. If slack the childs head would rest in the portion of the cloth over the indenture in'the ledge of the tub.
From the foregoing it will appear that in order to use the tub and cloth support it is necessary to first mount the cloth upon the tub as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Part of the tub is not covered by the cloth in order for the lower parts of the legs of the baby to hang down over the edge of the cloth with the feet of the baby resting on the main bottom portion of the tub.
Primarily the tub is intended for bathing babies, but may be made in larger sizes for children and invalid adults.
The tub may be made of any material suitable for the purpose but We prefer to use light metal. The cloth support is preferably made of canvas or similar material.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, we do not Wish to limit same to the exact and precise details of structure, but reserve the right to make all modifications and changes so long as they remain within the spirit and scope of the following claim.
Having described our invention we claim:
In a combined baby bath tub and cloth support for a baby comprising; an oblon shallow metal bath tub, a round flange integral with and forming the surrounding top edge of the tub, a ledge integral in one end portion of the bottom of the tub, an indenture formed in the ledge portion, said indenture defining a channel portion leading from the edge of the ledge and ending in a rounded portion of the indenture nearer the other end of the ledge; a piece of cloth of a size larger in area than approximately two thirds of the area space of the top of the tub, said cloth being of a shape similar to the said two thirds top area of the tub, a wide hem formed in part of the edge of the cloth, a cord or small rope inserted through the said hem, said cord or rope being of suflicient length to tie around. under the round flange of the tub and being adapted to retain said cloth in slack condition and in contact with the said ledge portion of the tub bottom.
