Description

Dec. 27, ANSQN INNERSPRING MATTRESS Filed Sept. 7, 1965 FIG. 7
INVENTOR,
MICHAEL D. ANSON FIG.6
United States Patent 3,293,670 INNERSPRING MATTRESS Michael D. Anson, 2311 Raleigh Laue, Louisville, Ky. 40003 Filed Sept. 7, 1965, Ser. No. 485,447 6 Claims. (Cl. -345) This application constitutes a continuation-in-part of patent application. Serial No. 412,046, filed November 8, 1964.
This invention relates to innerspring mattress constructions and, more particulanly, to the design of the frame, cover, and handle combination of an innerspring mattress.
The present invention discloses an improved handle and structure for attaching it to an innerspring mattress.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved innerspring mattress construction and handle combination.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination mattress, spring, and handle construction, which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and simple and efiicient to use.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved innerspring mattress having a top border wire, bottom border wire, and intermediate border wire having coil springs therebetween, a cover, and means for attaching handles in combination with handles to said center border wire.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing: I
FIG. 1 is a partial view showing an inner spring mattress;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged view of the attaching means shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is another partial view of the mattress shown in FIG. 1 with a handle attached thereto;
FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged view of another embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 6 is a view of another embodiment of the invention; and
FIG. 7 is a cross sectional view taken on line 7-7 of FIG. 6.
Now with more particular reference to the drawing, the mattress construction shown is made up of the usual coil springs 10, top border wire 11, bottom border wire 12, and intermediate border wire 13. The top, bottom, and intermediate wires are provided with clips 14 which are wrapped around the top, bottom, and intermediate border wires and around the appropriate turn of the coil spring 10.
The top border wire and bottom wire may be made in a form to define any two dimensional geometric shape which is, in the example shown, a rectangle. The helical support springs 10 will be located at each corner of the mattress and attached to the border wire intermediate points as shown in FIG. 3 to provide a sufficient support for the mattress.
The intermediate border wire 13 will be connected to a cover part 15 by hog rings as shown in the parent application or it could be connected by forming a seam as indicated at 18 wherein the upper part of the cover is 3,293,670 Patented Dec. 27, 1966 first wrapped around the center bar 13 and stitohed. Then the bottom part 30 of the cover is stretched around the border wire 12 and stitched at 18. 1
Thus, the cover parts 15 and 30 will be fixed to the center wire 13 as well as to the center turn of the coil springs 10 by way of the clips 14. Since the center wire 13 is slightly inside a plane passing through the margin of the border wires 12 and 11, the cover parts 15 and 30 will be held slightly inside the upper and lower marginal wires.
The mattress may have the usual felt padding 16 and sisal pads 17. The cover parts 19 will be placed over the top as well as over the parts 15 and 30. The parts 15 and 30 may be stitched at seams 40.
Handles like handle 50 may be attached to wire 13. The handle 50 in the embodiment shown in FIG. 3 may be in the form of a heavy wire or rod bent at the corners shown so that the legs of the handles extend perpendicular to the center border wire 13 and the wire may be bent around the center wire 13 at 51 as shown. Grommets 52 may be fixed to the cover 60. These grommets slidab=ly receive the legs of the handle. A hand engaging member 53, FIGS. 6 and 7, may be provided with a groove 54 that receives the handle 50 to form a comfortable hand engaging portion.
The embodiment of the handle shown in FIG. 5 shows the handle supported on the center border wire 13 with the cover portions 15 and 30 supported thereon as shown in FIG. 3; however, in this embodiment, the cover portions 15 and 30 are not sewed around the border wire. This handle is indicated at and it has the legs 151 bent around the center border wire 13 and slightly flared out at 154 so that the handle may be inserted through the openings 155 in the cover portion and the center border wire 13 received in the mouth that is defined by the ends 154 and the main portion of the handle at legs 151. When the handle is pulled outward, the border wire 13 will snap into the space as shown in FIG. 5; thus, a self-locking handle is formed.
The self-locking handles will be inserted through the eyelets or grommets 52 which have been placed in the border of the finished mattress indicated at 60. The small clip hooks on the handle will pass through the eyelets 52 and the hook on the handle will hook onto the border wire 13. Then as the operator pulls the handle outward, the mouth of the clip rides over the center wire and causes it to spread, thereby allowing the center wire to pop into the clip into the position shown in FIG. 3.
The foregoing specification sets forth the invention in its preferred practical forms but the structure shown is capable of modification within a range of equivalents without departing from the invention which is to be understood is broadly novel as is commensurate with. the appended claims.
