2 Claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a back construction for collapsible sofa beds which will enable the raising and lowering of the back cushion to expose a compartment formed of hinged members one of which may be brought forwardly of the back cushion to serve as a pillow back member or headrest when the cushion is lowered to normal position.
Invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the cushion back raised and the storage compartment exposed.
Fig. 2 is a schematic view in vertical section showing position of the parts when two members of the storage compartment have been brought outwardly and one member inclined backwardly to rest upon the lowered back cushion of the sofa bed.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the headrest protecting the back cushion of the bed, the latter being ready for use.
Fig. 4 is a schematic view in section and in dotted lines showing the primary elements when moved to the position of Fig. 1 and with the back cushion lowered.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown at l the primary body member of a collapsible sofa bed, and have diagrammatically shown a foldable mattress 2 and underlying foldable frame 3 of conventional manufacture as shown, for example, in Minnick, U. S. 1,366,820. The body member I is formed with arm rests 4 and a back 5. Said body member supports a back panel 6 at the ends of which are two triangular uprights 7 which may be reinforced by the members 8. At the bottom of the members I is a base-board 9. Thus there is formed a triangular compartment adapted to be covered and closed by an additional member.
The additiona1 closing and covering member for the compartment is the upholstered sofa back [0. The latter may be hinged to the back 5, but preferably is hinged to back panel 6 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Hinged to base-board 9 is a carrier l2 secured by a pair of conventional double hinged hinges or equivalent devices to headrest II. The said carrier for the headrest is shown as carrier board l2 in the drawings, although it can be of other formation since its purpose is to so support headrest II that it may lie in either one of three positions. The first position is, as shown in Fig. 1, flat against the back panel B; the second position is the dotted-line position Fig. 3; and the third position is that shown in full lines in Fig. 3. The reason for these positions of the headrest will now appear.
When the headrest lies in abutment with the back panel, shown in Fig. 1, bedding can be placed in the triangular compartment when the cushion back 50 is raised. The bedding may conveniently be held in position by an elastic band I212 When the bed is made ready for the application of sheets and pillows, it will appear as shown in Fig. 3. At the pillow area the upholstery of the sofa back cushion is protected by the headrest; and carrier l2 may be used, if desired, to hold the headrest in its forward position. When the bedding is removed from the compartment the headrest H is brought forwardly until it, and also carrier member i2, lie fiat upon the mattress 2. Thereupon the upholstered back may be dropped to rest upon members I and 8. This will enable headrest II to be moved inwardly to its inclined position, Fig. 3, and hence the headrest will be supported by the cushion back l0. Pillows may then be placed against the headrest.
By means of the invention a very useful compartment for bedding is provided, the elements of which are so formed and associated as to enable free raising and lowering of the upholstered back cushion and at the same time one element of the compartment can be brought forwardly and thence rearwardly as a headrest and protection for the back cushion.
Having described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A sofa bed having a compartmented back and headrest structure comprising a body member having a pair of spaced apart arm rests and a vertical back piece disposed between said arm rests, a cushioned back hingedly secured to the top of said back and adapted to be angularly disposed between said arm rests, a triangular com- References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Number Name Date 780,569 Mackenzie Jan. 24, 1905 1,329,612 Kroupa Feb. 3, 1920 2,394,969 Robinson Feb. 12, 1946 FOREIGN PATENTS Number Country Date 17,504 Great Britain 1910 746,402 France Mar. 7, 1933
