Description

Aug. 10, 1937. M. PELLEGRINI MATERNITY COT AND MATTRESS THEREFOR Filed Feb.

Application February 5, 1936 Serial No. 62,481
6 Claims.
This invention relates to maternity beds in general and more particularly to maternity cots and mattresses therefor.
During the pregnancy of a woman it is difficult for her to recline comfortably on her side because of the uneven strain on her sides due to the weight and extent of the abnormally protruding abdominal portion of her body and it is practically impossible for her to sleep on her abdomen in an ordinary bed.
The primary object of this invention is to provide means to enable a pregnant woman to recline comfortably without such an uneven strain on her sides.
A further object of this invention is to provide means to enable a pregnant Woman to recline comfortably on her abdomen.
Another object of this invention is to provide such enabling means which is adjustable to accommodate a woman throughout the various stages of pregnancy.
A still further object of this invention is to provide such enabling means which is convenient in operation and economical in manufacture and assembly.
Other and further objects of this invention Will be apparent as the same becomes better understood from an examination of the specification and claims in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view showing a cot embodying a part of this invention with the mattress removed;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the mattress apart from the cot;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the mattress and cot together; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a cover for the mattress.
Referring to the drawing more particularly, reference character I generally designates a cot including opposite longitudinal elements 2 and opposite transverse elements 3 suitably joined together to form a rectangular frame. Within the frame is a flexible support for a mattress 4 for the cot I. This flexible support includes two similar screen sections 5 and 6 joined by an intermediate canvas, or like fabric, section I. The screen sections 5 and B are each made of transverse and longitudinal wire elements welded at their intersections and suitably attached as by welding also, or otherwise, to the frame. The canvas section 1 is sewed at its edges to the frame elements 2 and the opposite inner transverse wire elements of the screen sections 5 and 6.
The mattress 4 is provided with a central opening 8 and centrally and gradually sloping walls there-within. The bottom edge of the mattress 4 at the opening 8 is in register with a co-extensive recess formed within the canvas section 1 5 by cutting a central opening therein and closing the same with a sack portion 9 sewed to such section at the edges of the opening therein. The sack 9 is preferably of two layers of fabric as shown with padding therebetween to keep out the 10 cold and to render it soft and yielding. The opening 8 in the mattress 4 and the walls thereof in said opening are designed as to size and slope to enable a woman in the advanced stages of pregnancy to recline comfortably on her abdomen with 15 her abnormally protruding abdominal body portion extending into said opening and sack. The depth of the opening thus provided is made adjustable by a pair of straps Ill and H, one transverse to the other and each provided with a buckle for lengthening or shortening the strap, sewed to the under edge of the sack 9 and extending across the bottom thereof so that the sack bottom may be raised or lowered to accommodate various stages of pregnancy. 25
The frame I of the cot is provided at each end with a pair of foldable legs l3 and I4 hinged to the frame, connected together by diagonal stays l5 and i6, and held in operative position by hinged stays l'l.
When it is desired to use the cot and mattress therefor in the usual way, a cover l2 may be placed thereon to close the opening 8 and with ties I8 attached to the legs of the cot.
I am aware that many changes may be made 5 and details varied without departing from the principles of this invention and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the details shown or described.
I claim: 40
1. The combination of a mattress provided With an opening and gradually sloping walls therein adapted to receive and comfortably support the protruding abdominal body portion of a pregnant woman and a mattress supporting means provided with a recess therein co-extensive with and in register with said opening to receive the outer part of said body portion.
2. The combination of a mattress provided with an opening with gradually sloping walls therein adapted to receive and comfortably support the protruding abdominal body portion of a pregnant woman and mattress supporting means including a flexible fabric member forming a recess co-extensive with and in register-with said open- 55 ing for accommodating the outer part of said body portion.
3. The combination of a mattress provided with an opening with gradually sloping walls therein adapted to receive and comfortably support the protruding abdominal body portion of a pregnant woman and a mattress supporting means including a flexible fabric closing the bottom of said opening for accommodating the outer part of said body portion.
4. The combination of a mattress provided with an opening therein adapted to receive the protruding abdominal body portion of a pregnant woman and a mattress supporting means provided with a sack-like portion co-extensive with and in register with said opening for receiving and supporting the outer part of said body portion.
5. The combination of a mattress provided with an opening therein adapted to receive the protruding abdominal body portion of a pregnant woman and a mattress supporting means provided with a recess co-extensive with and in register with said opening for receiving and supporting the outer part of said body portion and means for adjusting the depth of said recess.
6. The combination of a mattress provided with an opening therein adapted to receive the protruding abdominal body portion of a pregnant woman, a sack-like member co-extensive with and in register with said opening for receiving and supporting the outer part of said body portion and strap means across the bottom of said member for adjusting the depth of same.
