Description
C. D. KARR BEDD ING PAD Nov. 165, 193? Filed July- 13, 1934 Patented Nov. 16, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to pads for association with mattresses, and especially such as are intended for use in hospitals where the bedding elements are supported on a jointed frame to permit the patient to be shifted to a semi-sitting posture. More specifically, it relates to such pads when provided with loose corner straps which may be shifted from face ,to face of the pad and receive under them corners of associated bedding elements, such as a mattress or a portion of a supporting frame.
The object of the invention is to provide pads which have side boxing with such corner straps, and which consists in a structure such as is hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a boxed pad provided with corner straps;
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of a portion of the boxing of a pad and the end of a corner strap;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modified form of construction, the corner strap not being attached;
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view in the same plane as Fig. 2, and showing a modified detail 01' the invention; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the end portion of the strap shown in Fig. 2.
The pad to which the invention is applicable is usually oblong rectangular in form, as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with side boxing, as indicated at H). A pair of straps II, I 2 extend across adjacent corners of the pad and are attached to the boxing along its longitudinal median line, the ends of the straps which are associated with the end of the pad being preferably secured to the boxing at the same point.
In the construction shown in=Fig. 1 and more plainly in Fig. 3, the boxing I is provided with inserted panels l3, each of which is preferably of the width of one of the straps and is transversely divided along the longitudinal median line of the boxing. The panel I 3 is secured to the boxing by a line of stitching l4 along inturned flaps and the joined parts.
The upper and lower sections of the panel I3 preferably have inturned'flaps, as shown at l5, at the margins of the transverse aperture, and the end of the strap is inserted between ,these flaps and the three parts are then stitched together, as indicated at I 6.
The attachment of the two straps II and I 2 to the end of the pad is made in the same manner, except that both straps are secured Within the same transverse slit in a panel, such as I3. The straps are suiiiciently slack, as indicated in Fig. 2, 10 so ,that they may be turned over the included corner of the pad and be serviceable on either of its faces and will receive under them an associated pad, mattress or framing element and hold the various parts of the pad together when it is adjusted to give the patient a semi-sitting posture.
In order that the straps may lie smoothly and without buckling, their ends are cut obliquely,as
indicated in Fig. 6, the two ends being oppositely inclined.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the boxing is continuous-that is to say, without the inserted panels of the form of construction above described.
The slots for receiving the strap ends are out in the boxing fabric along its longitudinal median line, as indicated at IT, to prevent raveling, and to secure neatness of finish are button-hole stitched, as shown. The strap end is split along the median longitudinal plane of the strap, forming a pair of flaps I8, l9, which, after the strap end has been inserted through the slit II, are folded back against the inner face of the boxing III, as shown in Fig. 5, and secured to the boxing by stitching.
I claim as my invention:-
A bedding pad having marginal panels, and corner straps attached thereto, the panels having adjacent to each corner of the pad, upper and lower inserts, having instanding disconnected flaps at their adjacent edges, the strap ends entering between such flaps and being stitched thereto on lines inclined toward the ends of the strap from the margin thereof adjacent to the 4 corner of the pad.
