The present invention relates to beds and is more particularly directed toward beds of the type which can be converted from couch or settee to a bed suitable for sleep.

Couch beds and the like are generally provided with a permanent back-rest and arm-rests for the comfort of persons seated on the couch and to support pillows. Studio beds ordinarily do not have a back-rest, and if such a bed is to be used n as a seat during the day, it is necessary to place it against the wall to provide a back-rest and pillow support.

According to the present invention, the bed is arranged with a back-rest which may be held up 15 to support pillows and provide a back-rest for persons seated on the couch, or this back-rest may be swung down out of the way so that when the bed is used for sleep, there is no obstruction to interfere with the movements of the occupant.

20 The present invention makes it possible for one to have an article of furniture which functions as a couch or sofa during the day-time, and on which the pillows may be supported even though the couch is not pushed back against the 25 wall. When, however, the couch is to be used as a bed, the back-rest can be moved out of the wayso that the article becomes a conventional single bed.

The accompanying drawing shows for the pur- 30 pose of illustrating the present invention, one of the many embodiments in which the invention may take form, it being understood that the drawing is illustrative of the invention rather than limiting the same.

As here shown, the bed has a generally rectangular frame composed of interconnected back, end and bottom portions, and is made up from a 45 lower front longitudinal member I0, a lower rear longitudinal member ii, an upper rear longitudinal member 12, bottom end members l3, rear upright members Hl, front vertical members I5, and arm-rest forming members 16.

and is adapted to receive an ordinary box spring such as indicated at 20. This box spring is preferably the usual size for a single bed and is adapted to support a mattress and the usual bed clothing, as indicated at 2|. 5

The longitudinally extending member [2 is preferably placed just below the normal upper level of the mattress, and the arm-rests preferably extend to the rear, as indicated in the drawing. A back-rest indicated at 22 'is hinged at 23 to the frame member I2. This back-rest preferably comprises a suitable frame indicated at 24, springs, padding and upholstery indicated at 25. It has cut-out portions at the ends, as indicated at 26, to accommodate the arm-rests. Suitable securing devices such as sliding bolts are indicated at 21. One part of each securing device is attached to the back-rest and the other part to the adjacent arm-rest.

When it is desired to use the article as a couch or sofa, the back-rest is swung up to the full line position indicated in the drawing and is secured in position. It extends forwardly and overlies the rear edge of the mattress and affords a suitable and convenient back-rest, as well as a support for pillows. Upon release of the seeming devices 21, it is possible to swing the entire back-rest down to the dot and dash line positions indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. It hangs here without resting on the floor. The occupant of the bed has the full freedom of action of an ordinary bed of this size, as no interference is offered by the back-rest.

Couches equipped as herein described can be placed anywhere in a room so long as sufficient clearance is available to swing the back-rest down when desired.

It is obvious that the invention may be embodied in many forms and constructions within the scope of the claims, and. I wish it to be understood that the particular form shown is but one of the many forms. Various modifications and changes being possible, I do not otherwise limit myself in any way with respect thereto.

What is claimed is:

1. A bed comprising a frame having interconnected back, end and bottom portions, the end portions extending above the back portion, the frame being open at the front above the bottom thereof, a bed spring and mattress supported in the lower portion of the frame, the upper face 5 hang vertically downward alongside the back portion of the frame, and means to hold the back rest at raised position, the back rest being padded and extending forwardly to overlie the rear of the mattress.

2. A bed such as claimed in claim 1, wherein the arm rests and back rest are padded and the back rest extends forwardly to overlie the mattress and laterally to cover the rear portions of the arm rests.

3. A bed as claimed in claim 1, having means to detachably'secure the back rest to the frame ends. 7
