(Cl. 155-174) The present invention relates generally to a novel and improved cushion or back rest, but more particularly to a novel and improved construction of a bathtub cushion which may be conveniently attached to or detached from the curved and inclined portion of the bathtub so as to form a suitable support or rest when a person is bathing in the bathtub.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of cushion or back rest having suitably arranged vacuum cups for detachably fastening the cushion in position and having the cushion made of suitable material impervious to water so that when the cushion is submerged, the resiliency of the same will not be lost and the water soaking of the cushion eliminated.

These and other objects are accomplished by providing a construction and an arrangement of the various parts in the manner hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a conventional bathtub showing the manner in which my improved cushion or back rest may be attached thereto;

Fig. 2' is an end elevational view of my improved back rest; and

Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of the same.

My improved cushion or back rest is provided with quickly attachable means and is adapted for a variety of uses in connection with the backs of chairs or seats of conventional form or in connection with canoes, motor boats, bathing beach back rests or the like, but has special adaptation as a rest for a bathtub.

In illustrating the preferred form of m invention, I have shown the same as comprising or assuming a substantially rectangular casing or enclosure member, generally indicated by the reference character Hi. This casing l0 comprises a front and rear rectangular piece of material, indicated respectively, by the referenc characters l0 and Ii. The front and rear sections Ill and II of this rest may be made of any suitable material that is impervious to water, such for example, as plastic material, proxlyn coated cloth, rubberized or vulcanized cloth and the like. The four corners of these front and rear sections i0 and II respectively, are preferably rounded as shown at II. The outer .edges are bound by a welt it of material similar to that of the front and rear sections Ill and H respectively. The upper and lower ends of these strips are secured to the opposite edges of the surrounding welt 13, as shown at 18, so that the intermedia e portion of the strips 11 are unattached or not secured to the back section II of the cushion. The rubber suction cups 16 are secured to each of the strips I! by suitable bolts and nuts, generally indicated by the reference character 19.

Summarizing the advantages and novel features of operation of my improved cushion and back rest, it will, of course, be understood that by providing a cushion in which the casing or covering is made of material impervious to water and one which can b quickly attached or detached from any suitable supporting structure, such for example, as the inclined curved portion of a bathtub, I have provided a novel, simplified and efiicient means as well as a novel and simplified construction of a back rest which has great variety of uses.

While in the above specification I have described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will, of course,,be understood that the same is capable of modification and that modification may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the following claims.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A resilent back rest comprising a casing in which the material of said casing is made of material impervious to water, straps secured to one side of said casing and rubber suction cups secured to said straps and on the rear side of said back rest for detachably fastening said rest to a support.
