DETACHABLE COVER FOR-UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 659,251, dated October 9, 1900.
11 Application filed 1T anuary 6 1900. serial No. 600. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK N ERAD, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Ohicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Detachable Cover for Upholstered Furniture,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to couches or lounges, and has for its object to provide a new and improved upholstered cover or cushion for such articles.
With this object in view my invention consists in the improved construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming part of this speci-' fication, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a couch provided with a detachable cushion or cover constructed and secured in place on the couch in accordance with my invention, part of the skirt or flap of the cover being broken and turned back to expose the ordi-i narily-concealed membersof the fastening, which are secured under said flap, and the foot end of the removable cover or cushion being lifted up to better illustrate its removability and means of attachment to the frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view illustrating part of the woodwork or frame of the couch with one member of the fastener secured therein, the flap with the other member ready to be secured. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View illustrating the flap member of the fastener detached. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the frame member detached. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the dotted lines 5 5 of Fig. 1. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 show modified forms of fastener G.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts wherever they appear in the several figures ofthe drawings.
Referring to the drawings by letters, A indicates the frame of a couch or lounge of any ordinary construction, and B the detachable cover or cushion, the latter being provided with a flap or curtain 0, depending from its edges, said flap consisting of an extension of the material forming the upper face of the cushion-such as tapestry, velours, corduroy, &c.strengthened or not, as desired, bya lining of canvas or like material forming an extension of the bottom of the cushion or cover, as at I.
. E indicates the usual metallic springs, which are properly tied or connected to each other and to the frame by strings or wire and which in the use of my invention may or may not be covered with burlaps or other similar material tacked to the frame, such covering being unnecessary when the springs are closely and carefully tied or connected.
As before stated, D indicates the bottom of my detachable cover or cushion, upon which the hair or other stuffing material F is properly distributed or spread, and B the top covering, secured at the lower outer edges of the cushion to the bottom D, the cushion proper being of the correct size to fit the particular size and shape of couch to which it is to be applied. G indicates one member of the fastenings secured to the frame A by means of a point or nail H and having a flange I to prevent it, being driven in too far. J indicates the other member of the fastener, which consists of a disk formed with a socket to receive the head of member G.
The frame having been supplied with springs in the usual manner and with members G of the fasteners and the cushion bei'ng duly prepared, as before described, the latter is placed upon the frame, resting on the springs, and secured in position by attaching members G upon members J of the fasteners, and inasmuch as members J are secured under flap G, and thus concealed, the finished couch will present no view of fasteners whatever.
The advantages attending the use of my invention are numerous and may be partially enumerated as follows: By its ready detachability it provides easy access to its under side for purposes of repair, such as replacing buttons when the cushion is tufted. When springs become loose, bent, or broken, all that is necessary is to remove the cushion and make repairs, which can be done. Either the cushion or the couch may be thoroughly dusted and the cushion often hung out in the air to prevent the damage incurred by the presence of moths. If the cushion or its covering wears out, it may be removed and sent to the upholsterers to be re-covered or its measure sent for a new cushion. In these instances and many others which might be recited the usual necessity of sending the Whole couch to the upholsterers and the expensive work of removing and replacing the cushion as ordinarily tacked to the frame are entirely avoided and much unnecessary expense saved.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a couch or lounge, the combination with the usual frame and metal springs suitably secured to the frame and to each other, of headed pins secured around the frame, a cover or cushion consisting of stuffing material and top and bottom fabrics, said fabrics being extended to form a skirt or flap, and plates secured to and concealed in said flap FRANK NERAD.
