Description
. 28, 1952 w. s. cooK ErAL EDGE ROLL. FOR SPRING STRUCTURES Filed Aug. 30, 1948 INVENTORS.
Patented Oct. 28, 1952 EDGE ROLL FOR SPRING STRUCTURES Wayne S. Cook and Frank J. Hormuth, Grand Rapids, Mich., assignors' to Sackner Products, Inc., a corporation of Michigan Application August 30, 1948, Serial No. 46,911
This invention relates to improvements in edge rolls for use in upholstering parts such as spring assemblies.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an edge roll for upholstering spring assemblies and the like which may be quickly and easily applied and is very securely mounted with the outer edge of the roll substantially projecting beyond the border of the spring assembly or Vin` proper..relation to the parttobe upholstered. y y
Second, to provide an` edge roll having these advantages which may be securely applied or attached bymeans of clips, commonly referred to as -hog rings in the upholstering industry as distinguished from sewing. Y I
.Thirdf to .provide anedge roll. having these advantages in which the strain upon the parts engaged by the clipswis distributed substantially throughout the length of the structure although the clips are longitudinally spaced. Y
Other objects relating to details andeco-nomies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is dened` and pointed outinthe claims. A
A vpreferred embodiment ofthe invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing; in Which:V l
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary prospective view of an edge roll embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary prospective viewV illustrating the edgeroll applied to a spring.` assembly to be upholstered.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view furtherillustrating the application or securing of the` edge roll to a spring structure. e ,y
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary viewlooking from the outer edge of the edge roll showing structural detailsthereof. f Fig. 5 is a sectional view of-a modiledfor-m or embodiment of our invention. y F l .In the accompanyingdrawing we haveillusf. trated the edge roll ofour-invention applied to a spring structure comprising atop border frame I,-body springs 2, the lbody springs being secured to the border frame bymeansfof clips-3; -the springs are further secured'by means of tie `wires 4 land cross ties 5 conventionally shownin Fig'.- '3. Commonly the spring assembly is covered-withv a fabric 6, such for example Vas burlap;` having a depending 'skirt A portion -"I,' the rupholstering padding and the coveringtherefor'not being i1'- lustrated. -1` j Our improved edgeiroll isdesignated lgenerally' byi-'thelnumerall 8 andl comprises' an 'elongated 1o` claims. (ci. 155-184) 2 resilientcore .9 .desirablyof crumpled or crushed paper. desirably twisted.4 `A relativelyw softer padding I0` of. multiply cellulose tissue, some,-` timescommercially designated as cellulose wadding, is wrapped aroundthe core. The covering vII of fabric; desirably of burlap, completely embraces the resilient body portion and is extended to provideailapdesignated generally by the numerall I2. The padding is preferably extended into the nap, the covering and the padding being anchored and securedradjacent vthe inner edge of the core by means of a row of stitches I3.
The outer edges of the covering are wrapped around a beading or reinforcing cord I4 desirably of twisted paper and secured thereon by a .rod of stitches I5. VThis provides a reinforced flap `welladapted to be secured to the springs orother parts of the spring assembly by means of the clips I6 which are passed through the flap to embrace the stand I4 and are clinched as indicated at I 'I in Fig. 2.
An attaching bead I8 is formed on the under side of the edge roll in spaced relationship to its outer edge. This comprises a fold I9 inthe covering I I which embraces a reinforcing or beading strand 20, also desirably formed `of twisted paper. The loop or fold in the fabric is secured around the reinforcing strand desirably by a row of stitches 2| at the inner side of the strand 20. 'Ihis bead may be attached tothe body frame by means of clips I 6. 'In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the beading or reinforcing strand I4 is omitted. A single row of stitches I3 is illustrated in the aps. This provides an economical structure but lacks the strength of the preferred structure.
If vdesired the flap 22 of this structure is adapted to receive attaching clips or to be stitched or tacked to the` frame or part to be upholstered. The beading I8 of this structure provides effective means for attaching with the outer edge of theredge roll projecting the desired amount.
Inthe structure illustrated, the edge roll is of inwardly tapered section. The edge roll of our invention is adapted for a wide range of uses or applications and may be effectively applied by others than skilled upholsterers.
