1 Claim.

My invention relates to improvements in upholstered furniture structures and particularly to arm structures for upholstered chairs, couches, and the like.

The primary object of my invention is to simplify the present day practice in upholstering furniture so as to reduce the cost of manufacture and expedite production without sacrificing comfort and durability in the furniture.

Another object is to provide for upholstered furniture a pre-shaped upholstery foundation panel adapted to take the place of the usual webbing and burlap heretofore necessary in upholstering furniture arms, and whereby such materials and numerous stitching operations may be dispensed with, while at the same time maximum comfort is attained and wear reduced to a minimum.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claim appended hereto.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective, partly broken away and shown in section, illustrating my invention in the preferred embodiment thereof;

Figure 2 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the arm frame and the foundation panel disassembled.

Referring to the drawing by numerals, my improvements have been shown therein, by way of exemplifying one practice of the invention, as embodied in an arm of a chair, or couch, designated as a unit by the numeral I, the numeral 2 designating the arm, 3 the seat and 4 the back.

The arm 2 is of the commonly designated roll type and constructed, as regards the upholstery, on a wooden, leg forming, frame 5 including front and rear uprights B, 1, an upper cross bar 8, and a lower cross bar 9 both connecting said uprights. The front upright 6 is broad and fiat with a front broad side and the usual roll type head l rising above the upper cross bar 8, said upright being designed, as usual, to shape the front of the arm 2. The upper and lower cross bars 8, 9 are flush with the outer side edges of the front upright 6.

A foundation panel I l pre-shaped to the usual form of a roll arm is provided on the described frame and will now be described in detail.

The foundation panel Il may be pre-formed of metal, plastic, papier mach, or any other material suitable for preforming and withstanding the usual wear and pressure to which upholstery foundations are usually subjected. According to the illustrated practice of my invention, the foundation panel ll covers the inner side of the frame 5 from the lower cross bar 9 and is substantially hook shaped, in cross section, to provide an upper, lateral, outwardly extending roll l2 thereon open at its bottom and fitting around the head Ill and over the upper cross bar 8 with a terminal, longitudinal edge flange l3 secured to the outer side of said cross bar 8 by nails [4. A lateral, front edge, flange IS on said panel ll fits flat against the front of the front upright l and is nailed thereto, as at It. The roll I2 of the foundation panel ll tapers rearwardly in conformity with the usual design of a roll arm. A thickened lower edge I! may be provided on the foundation panel I I for reinforcing purposes.

A cushion layer I8 of resilient material, preferably latex, or rubber composition, or cotton batting, covers the foundation panel II and is preferably secured thereto and to the frame 5 by the nails l4, l6.

Finishing, upholstery material I9 is applied as a covering for the cushion layer 18 and is secured in place also, preferably, by the nails M, iii whereby said material is secured to the frame 5.

As will be understood, the described foundation panel ll forms a substantially rigid backing for the cushion layer [8 and the finishing material l9, and by virtue of the roll l2 thereof a single upper cross bar may be utilized in the frame 5 instead of multiple bars for forming the usual roll of the arm and which are essential in present day roll arm frames.

The foregoing constitutes a detail description of a preferred practice and embodiment of my invention, but is not to be construed in a limiting sense, the invention being susceptible of mod-v ification without departing from the inventive concept, and right being herein reserved to modifications falling within the scope of the claim appended hereto.

What I claim is:

An upholstered furniture structure comprising a frame including a pair of uprights and an upper and a lower cross bar connecting said uprights, a rigid panel imposed against said uprights at one side of the frame with a lower edge opposite and spaced from the lower cross bar, said panel having preformed thereon an upper hollow roll overlying the upper cross bar clear thereing a flange extending along one side edge thereof and around one end of said roll and attached to one of said uprights, and upholstery material 5 enclosing said frame and panel and extending across the space between said lower edge of the panel and the lower cross bar.
