/N VENTOH ATTOHN YS- UNTTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH G. IIOFSTATTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COUCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,306, dated February 14, 1899.
Application filed March 1 8,1 8 9 7.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LADOLPH G. HOFSTATTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to couches, and has for its object the production of a couch the upholstered portion of which is provided with a removable pillow for facilitating the re-covering of the same.
The invention consists of the combination, in a couch, with the main or body portion provided with a curved head-frame integral therewith, of a removable pillow frame adapted to be secured to the curved headframe and a pillow upholstered upon said pillow-frame, and, further, in means for attaching the pillow-frame to the head-frame, as will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the couch complete. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the frame of the couch before it is upholstered. Fig. 3 is a view of the frame of the pillow of the couch. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the upholstered pillow.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The main or body portion A of the couch is of the ordinary shape and construction, and comprises the usual framework braced and strengthened as desired and resting upon suitable supports. Integral with the frame of the body portion A or suitably secured thereto is the head-frame B, which extends upwardly in a shallow curve and terminates in an overhanging ledge b. The sides of the framework forming the head-frame B are braced by two strips 12 b,which are perforated to receive fastening-bolts, as hereinafter described.
The pillow D is upholstered upon a suitable pillow-frame D, which is substantially of the samesize as the curved head-frame B, on which it is secured. The pillow-frame D has suitable bracing-strips d d, and holes are provided therein correspondingin position to the similar holes in the head-frame for the reception-of securing-bolts, by which the pillow or head-piece is removably secured to the said Serial No. 628.124. (No model.)
head-frame. The pillowD is upholstered and covered by any desired fabric. Holes are provided in the braces of the pillow-frame for the reception of the securing-bolts by which the pillow is secured to the head-frame of the couch, said bolts passing through the braces in the head-frame B into the pillow-frame D. By removing the bolts the pillowD may be removed, re-covered when soiled, and replaced in position without in any manner disturbing the upholstering of the remainder of the couch. The upholstering of the overhanging ledge l) and of the main portion of the couch, together with the shallow curve of the headframe, forms a shallow pocket in which the pillow is adapted to lie, so as to complete the couch.
It is obvious that many changes in the detail of the construction may be made without departing from the scope of my invention. For example, instead of employing bolts other fastening devices for the pillow may be used or the shape of the pillow be varied according to the design of the couch.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a couch, the combination of a main or body portion, a curved head-frame having transverse strips provided with holes, a pillow-frame having transverse bracing-strips provided with holes, fastening-bolts inserted in the holes of said strips and bracing-strips for attaching said pillow-frame to the headframe, and a pillow upholstered upon said pillow-frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In a couch, the combination, with the main or body portion, of a curved head-frame integral therewith and terminating in an inwardly-projectin g ledge, a pillow-frame placed in said curved head-frame, a pillow upholstered upon said pillow frame, and means for attaching the pillow-frame to said head-frame, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLPH G. HOFSTATTER.
