UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BRAMHILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHAIR BOTTOM AND BACK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 51,132, dated November 28, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRAMHILL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs and other Articles ot' Furniture for Sitting and Recumbent Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of a chair-bottom constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in both figures.
This invention consists in the employment of soft vulcanized sheet india-rubber or indiarubber cloth in the bottoms and backs of' chairs and other seats and articles of furniture for sitting and recumbent purposes, such as stools, sofas, lounges, andthe seats of public conveyances. This material, beingtlexible and elast-ic, possesses all the advantages of a cushion in adaptingitself to the shapeof theperson, While it is more durable, more easily kept clean and t'ree from vermin, and permits free ventilation to the person and clothing.
The vulcanized india-rubber or india-rubber cloth is to be stretched or kept extended to form the seat-bottom or back on a frame ot'wood or other suitable sti material. When sheet india-rubber without cloth is used the perforations may be formed by punching or cutting the vulcanized sheet, or the sheet-rubber may be manufactured with suitable perforations;
but when vulcanized india-rubber cloth is used the perforations will be punched or cut from the cloth at'ter its Inanutacture,in the usual manner.
The vulcanized india-rubber or indiarubber cloth Inay be attached to the frame ot' wood or other rigid material in various ways; but I consider that mode which I have represented as well suited as any other, and I will proceed i to describe it.
A is the inner frame, of wood, ot' suitable 'orm, over the edges of which the pieces of perforated sheet india-rubber or india-rubber cloth I3, of suftciently large size, are stretched, and to which it is nailed or otherwise suitably fastened. Around the overlapping margin a a ofthe piece B are placed strips C C, ot' wood, which are attached to the frame A by means ot' screws b b or nails, and which are thereby made to assist in securing the margin a a to the frame A, or which may be made to secure the said margin to the said frame without any other aid.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The employment of perforated elastic vulcanized indiarubber or india rubber cloth, substantially as herein described, in the bottoms and backs ot' chairs and other articles of furniture for sitting and recumbent purposes.
VILLIAM BRAMHILL.
