To all whom 'it may concern: l
Be it known that I, JOHN E. BILLING, residing in Milwaukee, in the county of-Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification. Y
This invention relates to improvements in chairs of that type in which the back and seat are upholstered and formed of a separate frame shaped to conform to the human body and adapted to be connected to the chair frame in a simple manner.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a chair in which a removable supplemental frame is adapted to have all of the upholstering connected thereto and then inserted in position o-n the chair frame proper and fastened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair in which the upholstering may be formed and connected thereto by the use of tacks thus obviating the use of webbing and the usual sewing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair with a removable back whereby said back may be shaped to more closely fit the hollow of the back and form a more comfortable back rest than is provided with the ordinary construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair which is strong and durable in construction and in which the use of springs may be dispensed with without in any way affecting the features of comfort and ease of the chair.
The invention is, for convenience, illustrated in its embodiment in a rocking-chair, but it is to be understood as applicable to arm chairs, sofas, davenports and other articles of furniture.
With the above, and other objects in view, the invention consists of the chair and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claim, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters indicate the same partsv in all of the views: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rocking chair, embodying the improved construction; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the chair; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the supplemental frame removed from the chair; Fig. 4 is a front view thereof with the frame tipped slightly forward; and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of supplemental frame in which the back portion is separate from the seat portion.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 8 indicates the chair frame which consists of the sides 9 and front and back portions 10 and 11 respectively. The rear legs 12 of the side portions extend upwardly to form a back support 13 and are connected together with a transverse back supporting slat 14. A supplemental frame 15, formed of angular sfide members 16 connected together by seat and back slats 17 and 18 respectively, is adapted to be inserted in position on the chair frame and be connected thereto by screws 19 which pass through openings provided in the front portion 10 of the chair frame and the back supporting slat 14 thereof. The side members 16 are provided with recesses 16 into which the back slat 14 fits. The side members are curved medially and extend in lines to form, in connection with the transverse slats, a seat portion 20 and a back portion 21, both of which merge into one another. The transverse seat slats are curved downwardly, medially, to form a more comfortable seat and the front edges of the back portion of the side members are provided with forwardly projecting or curved lower back rest portions 22 which are adapted to shape the upholstering 23 at this point to fit the hollow of the back. The 4.upholstering 23 is tacked to the side members and the transverse slats and the tufting is produced by using button-headed tacks 24 which are driven through the upholstering and into the transverse slats. The upholstering is provided with the ordinary filling or stufling 25 which is interposed between the upholstering covering and a backing 26.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5 the seat portion is omitted and the supplemental frame 27 is shown as only a back portion which is adapted to be used .in connection with other seats. The upholstering is connected to the supplemental frame before said frame-is connected to the chair frame thus providing a very desirable and easy manner of handling the parts.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a chair is provided which is very simple in construction and inexpensive to 4 manufacture and which forms a very eommedial portions of the side portions of said fortable seat and a support for the back of frame and said recessed rear portions posi- 15 the user. A tioned to engage the transverse supporting What I claim as my invention is: slat of the chair frame, and means for re- 5 A chair, comprising a chair frame conmovably fastening the supplemental frame sisting of lside members connected together to the chair frame. by a front portion and a rear portion and a In testimony whereof, I affix my signa- 20 transverse supporting slat, a one piece supture, in presence of two Witnesses. plemental back and seat frame provided 10 withforwardly projecting lower back rest G JOHN E' RIL'LING' port-ions and with recessed rear portions and Witnesses: with transverse back and seat slats, said C. H. KEENEY,
back rest portions extending forwardly from ALMA A. KLUG.
