Description

M. MERKLEN. Chair Seat and Back.
No. 228,662 Patented June 8,1880.
in, I?
BY Q
ATTORNEY N.FETERS, PHOTU-UTHOGRAPIER WASHINGTON, n c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MARTIN MERKLEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHAIR SEAT AND BACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,662, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed February 19, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN MERKLEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair Seats and Backs, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings,Figurc 1 represents a perspective view of a chair with my improved chair seat and back, and Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section of the seat.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved chair seat and back of a light yet strong and durable character, which is adapted for parlor and other chairs; and it consists of a chair seat and back constructed of a series of plain rounds passing through holes of transverse rounds, having enlarged portions at the points of intersection.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the outer frame of a chair seat or back; B, a series of plain round pieces or strips, and G a series of transverse pieces or strips, which are provided with spherical or other enlargements or knobs, a, at the points of intersection, said
enlargements or knobs being perforated to admit the passage of the rounds B.
The series of plain rounds, as well as the cross-rounds, are let into mortises of the seat or back frame, and form therewith a stiff light and airy seat and back.
Both the plain and the perforated crossrounds are turned off on the lathe, and readily connected with each other by passing the plain rounds throughthe enlarged perforated portions of the cross-rounds. A peculiar style of the chair seat and back is thereby obtained, which, when properly finished oft in black and gold, is adapted for parlor-chairs, and for rustic chairs and sofas when madein light plain wood.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In chair seats and backs, the combination of an outer supporting-frame with rounds having enlarged perforated portions or knobs, and with plain rounds or strips passing transversely through the perforated rounds, both the perforated and plain rounds being secured at their ends to the outer frame, substantially as set forth.
yet
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of Feb ruary, 1880.
MARTIN MERKLEN.
