UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. TRAVIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO M. AND H. SGHRENKEISEN, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR COVEiRINGS FOR CHAIRS AND PARLGR-SUITES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 10,935, dated November 26,1878; application filed November 4, 1878. [Term of patent 3-}- years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. TRAVIS, of the city of New York, in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have originated and designed a Pattern or Design for Coverin gs for Chairs and Parlor-Suites, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
My invention relates to a pattern or design for that class of chair and parlor-suite coverings in which the covering for each chair or other article is complete in itself-that is, it has a complete design woven, embroiderethor otherwise placed or worked upon it, as distinguished from those coverings made from fabrics having a uniform figure or pattern, and out to proper size without regard to the breaking or interruption of the pattern at the edges of the coverings or cushions.
The accompanying .drawing represents an arm-chair having a covering according to my improved design. The fabric which I prefer to use is plush, and I usually embroider the design thereupon.
In the center of the back and seat is a wide stripe, A, formed of flowers, or it may be of other ornamental configuration, and extends from the lower front edge of the seat to the top of the back. On each side of this stripe, and about midway between it and the edge of the covering, is a vine, B. These vines are about parallel with the central stripe for the greater portion of their length; but near their ends they are turned toward said stripe, inclining obliquely toward and nearly touching it at the top of the back, and turning toward it approximately at a right angle on the front edge of the seat, and following said front edge nearly to the stripe.
While I prefer to use plush for the fabric of the covering, and to embroider the design thereupon, I do not confine myself to embroidered plush, as it will be readily understood that various covering-fabrics may be used and the design woven therein or printed thereon.
IVhat I claim is- The design for chairs and parlor-suites, substantially as shown, consisting of a fabric complete in itself, having a central. stripe, and a vine on each side thereof, the ends of which are turned inward toward the stripe, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
J. H. TRAVIS.
