UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. TRAVIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO M. & H. SCHRENKEISEN, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR CHAIR AND PARLOR-SUIT COVERINGS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 10,969, dated December 17, 1878; application filed November 29, 1878. [Term of patent 7 years] To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH H. TRAVIS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have originated and designed a Pattern or Design for Chair and Parlor-Suit Coverings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Chairs and parlor-suits have heretofore been covered with fabrics of different materials of uniform color, and also with fabrics divided into sections of different colors, a section of one color being at the upper portion of the back and front portion of the seat, and the lower portion of the back and rear portion of the seat being covered by sections of another color, as in my Design Patent No. 10,7 53, dated July 9, 1878.
The design or pattern which I have originated differs from these and all others of which I am aware in having the back and seat covered with any suitable fabric of any desired color or colors, the color or colors being distributed uniformly over the whole covering, or arranged in different-colored sections or divisions, and in having a band or strip of a different pattern or material arranged transversely across the back of the covering. This band or strip may be nearer to the top than the bottom of the back, and when the back is composed of two different-colored sections this band or strip may lie along the lower edge of one section or the upper edge of the other, or it may divide the back into two sections of the same color or design, in either case the general ornamental effect due to arrangement of the contrasting band or strip transversely between the top and bottom of the back being the same, and giving the article of furniture an elegant and distinctive appearance.
The transverse band or strip may be made of embroidered goods, or goods representing or imitating embroidery, stamped up, furred, printed, or figured goods of other kinds and of any suitable material; and the main portion of the covering may be made of a figured fabric or fabrics, such as raw silk, plush, or embroidered or other goods of any kind the fancy may dictate, it being borne in mind that the band or strip must have a contrasting or distinctive appearance, owing to difference of pattern or material from the main portion or adjacent sections of the main portion of said covering.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an arm-chair having the upper portion of its back and front portion of its seat covered with a fabric of one material or pattern, and the lower portion of the back and rear portion of the seat covered with fabric of another material or pattern, as shown in my Design Patent No. 10,753, dated July 9, 1878, and having the transverse band or strip arranged along the dividing-line of the two different-colored sections of the back. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a chair having its back covered with a fabric of uniform color and pattern, and having the transverse band or strip arranged between the top and bottom of the back, nearest the top.
Referring to Fig. 1, the letter A indicates the transverse band or strip, extending from edge to edge of the back-covering; B, the lower section of the back-covering, and O the upper section of the covering, the transverse band A contrasting with both these sections.
In Fig. 2, A is the transverse band, located near the top of the back, and dividing the back-cover into two sectionsB the lower, and B the upper, of similar color and pattern.
I do not confine myself to any particular relative dimensions of the two sections into which the transverse band divides the backcover, nor to any particular arrangement of the shades when the back is in two sections of different colors, as they may be greatly varied without departing from my invention.
Along the opposite edges of the transverse band I may arrange an ornamental cord, a, for a finish; but this is not essential.
WVhat I claim is A design for chair and parlor-suit coverings, in which the back-covering is divided into two sections or divisions by a band or strip extending across from side to side of the covering, and having a contrasting or dis- In testimony that I claim the foregoing I tinctive appearance with reference to said sechave hereunto set my hand in the presence of tions or divisions of the back-covering, said two witnesses.
