Description

H. COMPES.
SOFA. BEDSTEAD.
NQ. 190,556, Patented May 8,1877.

NPTERS. PHOTO-INHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.,
HENRY COMPES, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEIVI ENT IN SOFA-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,556, dated May 8, 1877; application led September 22, 1876.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY OoMPEs, of San Francisco, State of California, nave invented an Improved Sofa-Bedstead, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to that class of sofas ,or lounges convertible into bedsteads; and it consists in a novel arrangement of the arm or head of the sofa, whereby it provides or furnishes a continuous level pillow space or support within the frame when the same is opened, without the necessity of using the arm itself for that purpose, as will be fully described hereinafter.
The drawing shows, in Figure l, a lon gitudinal section of thehead part of the lounge-` frame, and Fig. 2 a vertical cross-section on the line mw in Fig. l, looking toward the head, with the seat and head frames opened to form a bed.
My invention consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the several parts, as fully hereinafter explained.
The seat-frames A A', represented in part in Fig. 1, are hinged together at c, and turn over one upon the other, the upper'one being provided with a leg or support to sustain its Weight. The head or arm is separated at the line d into two parts, B B', hinged together at c', the part B' turning outwardly and over in line with the seat-frame A'. The
outer side D of the lounge-frame, in line with the head or arm, is connected with the loungeframe, and not with the upper halt' B' ofthe arm,
so that a smooth and undivided surface is presented outwardly, not interfering with the ornamenting ofthe frame. Cross-pieces or slats a a' are placed in the two parts of the headframe,` so that, when such head frame is opened, they will form supports for the pillows without the necessity of upholstering the arms themselves for such purpose, While the frame B' is of height that, when turned over, as in Fig. 2, it rests upon the floor and supports that half of the head.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe combination, in a bed-lounge, of the frames A A', hinged together, the head-frame divided into the hinged parts B B', the upper part being adapted to turn over and rest upon the door, the slats a a',and the stationary side D, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
In witness WhereotI have hereunto set my handand sealthis 2d day of May, A. D. 1876.
