My invention relates to the frame work for'beds and is applicable to beds generally its greatest utility in connection with beds intended for use in hotels. v v

The main purpose of my invention is to support the bed frame wholly from theside rails and. to make its.supportquickl and easily removable by structure involving a minimum of expense and complication.

A further purpose is to form a co mealer supporting frame wholly separate and dis tinct from the bed frame and to rest the oed frame removably uponit.

A further purpose is tosecure and simplicityof application and construction along with unusual ease in assembl A; further purpose istouse, an auxiliar frame support taking the entire weight of the bed as a means of stiffening the side rails of the bed frame and the entire frame" through the side rails.

A further purpose is to provides bed frame, comprising complete head and foot boards and side rails, with a wholly separate supporting structure from which it may be removed by lifting merely.

A further purpose is to support the bed wholly free from the head and. foot boards. Further purposes will appear in the specification and in the claim.

I prefer to illustrate in the drawing one construction only, selecting one which simple, highly practical and reliable and which at the same time well illustrates the principles of my invention.

The supporting bars 14 are connected'with the side rails by a joint which gives firm engagement in use but permits quick, simple and easy release by merely lifting the side rails from them.

The supporting frame carries the spring, mattressand bedding as well as the bed frame.- This makes it possible to lift the bed frame as a unit from the supporting frame and mattress and to substitute another bed frame therefor, or to separately remove the bed parts therefrom.

I have found that the most satisfactory type of joint between the supporting bars and the side rails is a dovetail joint and illustrate this .in the drawings. The projecting dovetailed ends 16 extend into correspondingly dovetailed recesses 17 in the side rails and, for convenience in cutting these recesses, extend entirely throughthe side rails so that the ends '18 of the dovetail projections 16 are flush with the sides 19 of the side rails. The appearance of the side rails need not be marred by this as a finishing strip or border 20 can be placed dovetail projections.

It is desirable to provide a slight vertical taper upon the edges 23 of the projections and the edges 24 of the taper so that the projections may be made to fit tightly in the recesses when fully home Without interfering with easy and quick release whenthe bed is lifted from the supporting frame. I have obtained the best results when the'parts fit together just tightly enough to require a' slight jar for their release. Y

' The points of engagement between the supporting frame and the side rails are preferably chosen at some distance from the ends of the side rails so that the frame will give a maximum stiffening to, the side rails, permitting the use of lighter side rails Where this is enough desired. V

The use of my supporting frame greatly stiffens the bed against diagonal Sillitllhlllttking it unusually firm and rigid and thus protects the joints between the head and footboard respectively and the side rails.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple rigid construction easy to setup and take down, which greatly adds to the strength of the bedstead and not only prevents substantial movement of any part of it but eliminates squeaking. The entire bed lifts off the frame Without touching or unfastening any part of it and the appearance ofthe bed is in no Way marred by the use of the frame. 7

It Will be evident that other structures capable of securing all or a part of the'benefit of my invention will occur to those skilled in the art in View of my explanation herein and it is therefore my purpose to include all such as come within the reasonable spirit and scope of my claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z--- In a bed structure, a bed frame comprising head and foot boards and side rails rigidly united together, in which the side rails are adapted to support the weight of the head and foot boards, a spring-supporting frame inside the bed frame, having legs long enough to support the bed frame and having ends, the said ends being extended on both sides of the frame, and dovetailed joints between the extensions of the springsupporting frame and the side rails wedging into rails to support the bed frame.
