2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in bedstead construction and especially aims to provide therein novel, short, detachable rail members or brackets which coact with a modern spring base or frame to rigidly connect same to the head and foot boards without the necessity of employing the usual long side rails and further attaining simplicity and reduction in cost, weight and bulk without sacrifice of strength.
Another important object is to provide such a construction wherein the short detachable rail members will especially coact with head and foot boards of wood by eliminating the employment of side rails and the several wooden cross slats which support the bed spring structure.
It addition it is aimed to provide a construction in which certain features of the invention are practiced in connection with full lengthand preferably transversely connected side rails of a bed.
Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead embodying my improvements, the same being broken away at portions thereof;
Figure 2 is a section taken substantially on the line A--A of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the short side rails or brackets and fragment of the spring frame;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the short side rails or brackets;
Figure 5 is a plan view of a modified form of frame, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the latter.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, It! and II, respectively, designate head and foot boards of a bedstead, being of any desired size, construction or configuration, and of wood, metal or other appropriate material. Said head and foot boards 10 and I! provide vertical corner posts I2 each of which has a pair of vertically aligned slots l3 crossed by metallic pegs M for detachable connection of adjacent parts of the bedstead structure thereto.
A mattress supporting spring structure is employed at S of the type having a continuous rectangular base or frame l5 which is angular in cross section to provide a vertical flange l6 and an upper horizontal flange IT. The spring structure S is conventional and the spring means on which the mattress rests is suggested at 18.
Short side rails or brackets l9, are employed at thecorners of the frame [5. Each bracket I9 is preferably in a single piece and capable of being stamped out of sufiiciently strong sheet metal. Each bracket has a verticalwall 20 and a lateral or horizontal flange 2i at the base thereof. As
shown,'wall 20 throughout most of its length at its upper edge contacts the under surface of flange ll of the spring frame 15 while flange 2i contacts the lower edge of flange l6 of that frame I5. Bolts 22 removably pass through openings 22 in said flange I6 and wall 20 to rigidly secure the brackets to the spring frame I5.
As shown in Figures 1 to 3, abutment members 26 may be struck out from the extended portions 23. Any equivalent means may be substituted for members 26 as in Figure 4 where an angle iron 21 is welded to portion 23 and is of a length substantially equal to the two hooks so that a laterally extending flange 28 constitutes an abutment member.
It will be realized that the structure enables manufacture entirely of metal but especially enables head and foot boards of wood to be employed where a composite bed or a wooden bedstead eifect is desired. The posts l2 made of wood enable very expeditious provision of the slots l3 and pegs 14 of a size for rigid but detachable connection of the short side rails or brackets thereto. The side members of frame l5 in accordance with the invention perform the function of the usual bed side rails, greatly simplifying construction without sacrificing strength, and also reducing cost of manufacture, bulk and weight.
A modified form of the invention is shown in Figures 5 and 6 which employs parallel side rails 30 of channel cross section to provide lateral flanges 3|. Said side rails 30 adjacent their ends are connected by cross rails 32 so that a frame is provided to support a conventional spring structure and bedding on the latter. Rails 32 are of channel form having lateral flanges 33 terminally overlapping flanges 3| and rigidly secured thereto as by welding at 34.
Beyond the flanges 3| and cross rails, the vertical walls of rails 30 are provided with pairs of hooks 35 and openings 36, identical with those at 24 and 25, respectively, for attachment to the foot board I and head board II at the slots l3 and pegs M in the same manner as the short side rails or brackets l9. In this modified form, however, the cross rails 32 abut the posts l2 in lieu of the members 26 or angle irons 21.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In bed construction, a frame, said frame having sides and ends arrangedin rectangular relation and providing a continuous vertical flange and an outwardly extending continuous lateral flange at the top thereof, brackets fastened to the sides of said frame at its comers and having portions in contact with the outer faces of said Vertical flange and the under surface of said lateral flange, flanges on said brack ets of approximately the full length of the brackets extending inwardly from the lower edges of said portions disposed in contact with the lower edge of said vertical flange and extending beneath said ends of the frame at the corners, and each bracket having a vertical part beyond the corner of the frame provided with hook means for detachable connection to a foot board or a head board.
2. In bed construction, a foot board, a head board, each board having slots and pegs crossing the slots, a spring frame, said frame having sides and ends arranged in rectangular relation and providing a continuous vertical flange and an outwardly extending continuous lateral flange at the top thereof, brackets at the sides of said frame at its corners, fastenings detachably securing portions of said brackets in contact with the outer faces of said vertical flange of said sides and the under surface of said lateral flange, flanges on said brackets of approximately the full length of the brackets extending inwardly from the lower edges of said portions disposed in contact with the lower edge of said vertical flange and extending beneath said ends of the frame at the corners of the frame, hooks on said brackets beyond the corners of the frame insertible into said slots and engaged with the pegs, and abutment means on said brackets beyond the frame engageable with the adjacent boards, the sides of the frame and the associated brackets functioning in lieu of side rails.
